Today we’d like to introduce you to Constance Edwards Scopelitis.
Hi Constance Edwards, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Constance Edwards Scopelitis graduated with a fine arts degree from Indiana University. She continued her studies with legendary American figurative painter Isabel Bishop. Further studies at the Art Students League in NYC set Constance on a career path of executing large-scale narrative figure paintings and realistic formal oil portraits. Her portraits are in the collections of major American corporations, Universities, and private individuals.
Scopelitis has been awarded national and international fellowships including the Vermont Studio School, Schildersweek in Holland, the Creative Renewal Fellowship through the Eli Lilly Foundation and the DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award. Constance fulfilled a Fellowship Residency in New Harmony, IN through the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation in May of 2026. She has appeared in D-Railed and Art Spiel magazines and has been regularly exhibited in national and international art fairs including Art Miami during Basel Week.
Scopelitis was selected as a Time-Based finalist for ArtPrize8 and has exhibited in solo and group museum shows in FL, IN, MI, and GA. While her master works are considered her graphite drawings, she is also known for her tech oriented lenticular prints, animated videos, and interactive touch screen programs. She also works with neon and mixed media to create timeless imagery with a contemporary edge. She works consistently to maintain her formal training while pushing the boundaries of 21c technologies.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since the ‘selfie’ is the most desired work of art and I am an oil portrait artist (amongst other mediums), my career has been steady and rewarding for my entire life. I would say my biggest challenge along the way was the lack of a mentor, male or female, as I was living my self-employed life. I literally had to make things up as I went along. Art production, business development, and financial responsibilities were on a huge learning curve once I exited art school.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
While I have a highly cultivated skill for attaining a likeness in portraiture, I have expanded into many mediums and genres over the years. Authentic self-expression requires using whichever medium best conveys the idea. I have worked in textile art, drawing, painting, video animation, interactive programmed work, lenticular 3D photographic prints, and even neon. Early in my career, I was advised to adopt a signature style and stick to one medium. I rejected that advice, freeing myself to use whatever tools best served my subjects—and I have no regrets.
Drawing is my first love, primarily using graphite, carbon, and colored pencils to create photo-realistic work. The practice offers a meditative sense of calm in a disordered world. Often inspired by social and political events, I use symbols and metaphors rather than explicit imagery to invite viewer contemplation. I am not interested in creating beauty for its own sake.
I was described as a Narrative Figure painter for many years. Now, I am firmly considered a Mixed Media artist.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I cannot work in my studio without the presence of music. I choose a different playlist everyday according to my mood, vibe, and energy level. I listen to everything from jazz, to country, to hip hop, and rock. I will attend a live symphonic concert but classical music is too mathematically complex to listen to while drawing or painting.
