Daily Inspiration: Meet Brooklyn Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Kelly.

Hi Brooklyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Brooklyn and I got my start in musical theater as a child. As I was growing up, I would write my own music and create my own beats in Garage Band. I continued with the arts throughout my time in middle school, high school, and college. My passion carried me through my life, and now I make a living making music and working in entertainment. Most of my time now is focused on honing my craft and expressing myself through my music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road since there’s not a clear trajectory in the entertainment business. One of the struggles I faced and sometimes still face are the highs and lows. Entertainment careers fluctuate quickly and change like the different seasons. In the entertainment business, there’s a lot of different variables that come at different times. Some seasons may be barren like the winter and some may be plentiful like the fall or spring. Once I can understand which season I’ve entered, it can take the burdens and expectations off my shoulders. One thing that’s really helped me shift between the different chapters is being open and flexible with the changes that can take place in my career.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently produce and write my own music either by myself or with my friends. It’s really exciting to create something and share it with the rest of the world once it’s done. Depending on the song, I may also apply some of my other talents. Some of my songs may inspire me to also dance, some may inspire me to craft a new costume or even write a whole acting scene within the concept. When I write some songs, I can see a visual story play out in a music video format. I usually let the song tell me what else it needs/wants. For example, after the first studio session for “Obsession,” I already saw some components of the music video. I initially saw the colors orange and pink and I saw elements of dancing. As I was creating my recent album, “High Priestess,” I saw colors as I was writing the songs. This helped me understand that the album could encompass chakra healing as well. This gave me a guideline of what I needed to piece together in order to achieve the visuals in my head for the album. Since I create music videos for artists through my company, DollHouse Studios LLC, I had a rolodex of people I could contact to get the project done. I initially created DollHouse Studios LLC to represent LGBTQ, BIPOC, and women artists. I’ve been having a lot of fun doing it!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I can see a ton of shifts in the music industry and entertainment industry overall. I think that a lot of consumers have adapted to the short form content, and we’ll still see that element incorporated through the media. However, I think many creatives can agree that the current status of our industry is alarming as some forms of media feel “cheapened” by the quick paced, viral mentality. I believe that there will be a shift where people will want to consume longer forms of content and want music that feels fulfilling and not like a quick attempt to going viral. This will give an opportunity for artists to really exercise their authenticity and their ability to be seen/ perceived. There’s merit in both avenues. I think that artists can maintain depth while also showing brief clips of their process and their music. I think we’ll see more of a balance achieved.
