Hi Billy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey in the entertainment industry has been both unique and exhilarating, beginning in 2015 as an intern for MTV’s ‘Jackass.’ This experience opened doors to work on WWE networks ‘Swerved’ and other comedy productions, providing me with invaluable insights into the entertainment world.
In 2014, while pursuing my graduate studies at the University of Alabama, I harnessed the power of virtual assistants to reach out to numerous rap artists’ managers. This initiative was a balancing act between my academic commitments and my passion for the music industry. I was paying people in Venezuela $3 an hour to email every manager in entertainment my resume while I slept.
The turning point came in 2015 when Riff Raff performed at my school. I seized the opportunity and was hired on the spot backstage. Working with Riff Raff was a whirlwind of experiences; I lived with him, toured with him, and managed his marketing operations until 2018. These years were fundamental in shaping my understanding of the industry.
My big break occurred in 2016 with a bold move. Learning that the hip-hop artist Partynextdoor was relocating to LA, I contacted his manager, pretending to be an acquaintance, and offered to help with the move. This led to a series of fortunate events, from moving boxes to bartending at his housewarming party – a role I audaciously claimed despite having no prior experience.
The momentum continued when I was invited to Toronto for OVO fest to assist Drake’s family with show operations. These experiences were not just about being in the right place at the right time; they were about taking initiative, being adaptable, and learning on the go.
In 2019, I began working with G59 Records, a role I cherish to this day. Simultaneously, I continue to assist friends across the entertainment industry, leveraging the diverse experiences and networks I’ve built over the years.
Reflecting on my journey, it’s clear that a combination of determination, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks has been instrumental in my career progression. Each step, whether it was working with high-profile artists or managing behind-the-scenes operations, contributed to my comprehensive understanding of the industry, ultimately leading to the founding of AudEarn.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Reflecting on my journey, it’s evident that the path has been anything but smooth. One of the foremost challenges was the lack of support from industry veterans. As a newcomer trying to break into the entertainment industry, I often found that many established professionals were reluctant to offer guidance or assistance. This lack of mentorship made navigating the complexities of the industry even more daunting.
Financial instability was another significant hurdle. There were times when I was stiffed on payments by major artists, which was not only a financial blow but also a tough lesson in the unpredictability of this business. Additionally, during several tours, I endured harsh conditions, including sleeping in a minivan in the middle of winter. The compensation for these tours was meager, barely enough to cover my basic living expenses.
My chosen career path also led to misunderstandings and disagreements with my family. Despite having a master’s degree, I pursued a field with little job security, which my parents found difficult to comprehend. They struggled to see the value in chasing what they perceived as a ‘pipe dream,’ creating a gap between their expectations and my aspirations.
I encountered discouragement not just from industry veterans but also from peers and acquaintances. I was often advised to settle for roles and goals that, in my view, fell far short of my potential. These moments of doubt and discouragement were disheartening, yet they also fueled my determination to prove my capabilities and reach my full potential.
The demands of this career path extended to my personal life as well, making it challenging to maintain stable friendships and relationships. The irregular schedule and constant travel required for my work often meant sacrificing personal time for professional commitments.
Despite these numerous challenges, each obstacle has been a valuable learning opportunity. They have taught me resilience, the importance of self-belief, and the ability to adapt in the face of adversity. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping not only my career but also my personal growth and resilience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work revolves around helping artists, influencers, musicians, and athletes to fully capitalize on their audience base. I specialize in implementing efficient systems that generate passive income, essentially setting these income streams on autopilot. This approach not only enhances their revenue but also allows them to focus on their core creative and athletic pursuits.
What distinctly sets me apart in this field is my extensive network of connections and my unique ability to rapidly assemble a highly effective team. This capability is crucial, especially when big projects need to be executed within tight timeframes. The agility and efficiency of this approach have proven invaluable in numerous high-pressure situations.
My clients rely heavily on me for this reason. I provide not just technical expertise in audience monetization but also the reassurance that, regardless of the constraints, their objectives will be met with the highest standards. This reciprocal dependence forms the foundation of my professional relationships, where trust and efficiency are paramount.
What I am most proud of is the tangible impact my work has on my clients’ careers and lives. Witnessing their success and knowing I played a part in it is incredibly rewarding. My approach is always client-centric, focusing on their specific needs and tailoring strategies that align with their individual goals and brand ethos.
This personalized approach, combined with my knack for rapid team mobilization and strategic income system implementation, is what distinguishes me in this competitive field. It’s a role that continuously challenges and inspires me, pushing me to innovate and adapt in an ever-evolving industry.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking towards the future, my ambition is to expand the scope of my career and company beyond just assisting established artists and influencers. I am particularly passionate about creating opportunities for aspiring individuals who are eager to break into the entertainment industry. My goal is to provide them with real guidance and actionable strategies to turn their dreams into reality, much like I was able to do for myself. This mentorship aspect is something I deeply value, as I understand the challenges and uncertainties that come with trying to find a footing in this competitive field.
Additionally, I have a personal aspiration to give back to my parents. Their unwavering support has been a cornerstone of my journey, even during times when the end goal wasn’t clear to them or even to myself. They stood by me through the uncertainties and challenges, and I believe it’s important to acknowledge and repay their faith and support. It’s not just about financial repayment but also about showing them that their belief in me wasn’t misplaced and that their support has culminated in tangible success.
In terms of big changes, I’m looking at ways to innovate and evolve the services we offer, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of audience monetization and digital marketing strategies. This might involve embracing new technologies, exploring uncharted markets, or developing new methodologies that align with the rapidly changing digital landscape.
Overall, my future plans are centered around growth – both professionally in terms of expanding my company’s offerings and personally in terms of giving back to those who have supported me and helping others to achieve their own success in the entertainment industry.
