Daily Inspiration: Meet Beau Cockrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beau Cockrell.

Hi Beau, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with makeup has taken me on a very wild adventure over the past nearly decade. From full-blown clown drag to soft natural glam, I am continually experimenting with the medium to find a pulse on what resonates with me entirely.

As I get closer to the artist I ultimately want to become, I find that the simplest concepts have the most significant impact on me and the work I create. I aspire for clean lines, smooth blends, thoughtful color stories, and striking imagery. The hallmarks of my work are my attention to color, shape, and transformation; making small adjustments that create massive impact. Taking a look back, my love for extravagant makeup has always been prevalent and only continues to grow. I find so much joy and passion in combining more extravagant/drag makeup styling with modern beauty techniques and application methods to create a singular look that is unique while simultaneously paying homage to its many references. Moving forward, I hope to create work that makes the viewer feel something, whether that be a positive or negative emotion; I crave impact.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road at all! However, I believe the journey to your destination is where the real magic lies. Since moving to a bigger city like LA almost two years ago, I’ve been humbled in ways I never even thought possible. With each and every perceived failure, a bit of my ego got chipped away until I was left with nothing but my love and passion for the craft. I stripped away the desire to be perceived as perfect and allowed myself to become softer and more absorbing of the work environments I was being placed in by using each moment to truly listen. Just breathe, listen, absorb, and apply. I have allowed myself to accept that I’m indeed not meant to be the best at everything but that what I have to offer is completely invaluable. My unique perspective and experiences combined with my talent and love of the craft have gotten me where I am today and will ultimately take me where I’m going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist through and through. I am most known for my drag/editorial beatdowns and full fantasy beauty imagery. My work is characterized by my concise color stories, clean application, smooth blends, and striking images. My personal beauty aesthetic toys with the idea of gender as a construct, and I always include my mustache in my looks as a staple component. I like the marriage of gorgeous, feminine round shapes with harsh, angular contours and features to provide a truly unique beauty fantasy. Putting in the hours and truly loving the work has been vital for my growth as an artist, and the thing I can say I’m truly proud of is my never ceasing desire to learn and improve. I’m the first to say I don’t know everything and am so excited to hopefully one day be able to observe in person and learn from those who have mastered their craft. In growth, there is so much potential for true magic to occur. And ultimately, I really can turn a base, eye, and lip out with my eyes closed. My mother didn’t name me Beau for nothing!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I truly came out of my mother’s womb ready to glam the dolls. Even as a young kid, I always loved glam and beauty and pampering myself. I remember being so immensely jealous of my sister being able to openly express her desire to have her friends over for a sleepover to do makeovers. Just recently I realized that I’m now living out the glam dreams I had as a kid, and my inner child smiles. I was always very outgoing and always had a girl or two by my side. Connecting with the boys didn’t come as naturally to me, so I usually just stuck with the girls. I loved musical theater, so much so that I taught myself how to play piano so I could learn the Wicked score. Still a great party trick to whip out Defying Gravity on the keys. If I wanted something, I set my sights, made a plan, and always made it happen. I’m very blessed that I had a supportive mother and sister to set me on the right path and keep me in line. Overall, I’m finding as I get older, it really pays to get in touch with who you were as a kid because usually… you always knew who you wanted to be.
