Daily Inspiration: Meet Azam Maseeh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Azam Maseeh.

Hi Azam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Leaving a country where women’s rights were limited was the beginning of a profound transformation. In my new home, I discovered the freedom to pursue my dreams, create meaningful work, and build a career that reflects my soul. That freedom became the foundation for everything I do today.

Fashion has always been more than style to me; it’s a language of self-expression. In the early days, I was overflowing with ideas but didn’t yet know how to bring them to life. Learning to sketch changed everything. It became the bridge between my imagination and reality, allowing me to translate emotion into form.

Fashion was a dream I carried quietly for years. Life took me in other directions. I married young and became a devoted mother to two children, including a son later diagnosed with autism. When they were in elementary school, I explored enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) in Orange County, but the timing didn’t align with my family’s needs. A few years later, I began private lessons with a FIDM instructor, learning the basics of sketching twice a week. Then came the pandemic, a moment of pause that became a turning point. I immersed myself in online courses, refining my artistic skills and deepening my understanding of design. Through sketching, I found a new way to process emotion, and soon I was collaborating with a tailor to bring my designs into real garments.

I began my fashion journey later in life, but with a heart full of purpose. It wasn’t the traditional path, but it was mine, and it felt right. Even when things didn’t go as planned, I embraced every step as part of the learning process. When you create from love, even the challenges carry meaning.

To me, fashion isn’t just a business; it’s an emotional language. Each design I create holds a story, a feeling, a moment in time. My pieces are like my children; I can’t choose a favorite because each one reflects a different part of me.

My luxury contemporary designs are deeply personal, often inspired by the voices and stories of women. They are more than garments; they are expressions of emotion, strength, and identity. I’m proud of each one because they were born from love and intention.

At the heart of my work is authenticity. I design with intuition, guided by emotion rather than trends. Confidence, passion, and a deep connection to feeling shape my creative process. I believe that when you truly love something, you shouldn’t fear taking risks or making mistakes. Growth comes from trusting your creative flow and honoring your journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been deeply meaningful. I may not be a traditional risk-taker, but I’ve taken emotional risks by sharing my personal beliefs, feelings, and inner world through my designs. That kind of vulnerability takes courage.

My style leans toward the avant-garde pieces that aren’t necessarily meant for everyday wear. Creating in that space requires a willingness to stand apart, to be misunderstood at times, and to stay true to a vision that doesn’t always fit into conventional molds. But I believe that’s where true artistry lives: in the courage to be seen, to express something deeply personal, and to trust that your voice matters.

Every design I create is a reflection of my journey. With each one, I’ve had to overcome self-doubt, fear of judgment, and the challenge of balancing creativity with life’s responsibilities. But those struggles have shaped me. They’ve made the work more honest and more human.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer specializing in luxury contemporary womenswear with an avant-garde edge. My work is deeply personal; each piece is a reflection of emotion, memory, and imagination. I don’t just design clothing; I tell stories through fabric, form, and silhouette. My designs are known for their bold artistic expression and emotional depth.

What I’m most proud of is that I started this journey later in life, after raising a family and navigating many personal challenges. I returned to my passion with clarity, purpose, and a strong sense of identity. Every garment I create is born from love and intention, and that authenticity is what sets my work apart.

I design intuitively, guided more by feeling than by trends. My pieces are not mass-produced or trend-driven; they are crafted to evoke emotion and spark connection. I believe fashion can be a powerful emotional language, and I use it to express the parts of myself that words can’t always reach.

What sets me apart is the vulnerability I bring to my work. I’m not afraid to reveal my inner world through my designs. That emotional honesty, combined with a commitment to craftsmanship and storytelling, is what defines my creative voice.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never really seen myself as a risk-taker in the traditional sense. For me, it’s always been about following my heart and staying true to what I believe in, even when the path wasn’t clear or easy. I think when you’re driven by purpose and compassion, what others might see as “risk” feels more like a necessary step toward fulfilling your calling.

Leaving stability to pursue fashion, creating designs that reflect stories and emotions, and standing for something meaningful through my work—all of those could be seen as risks. But to me, they were acts of faith. I simply couldn’t ignore the pull to create, to connect, and to make a difference through art and design.

So while I don’t label myself a risk-taker, I do believe in courage; the courage to keep going when things are uncertain, to trust your instincts, and to pour your heart into what you love. That, to me, is the most rewarding kind of “risk” there is.
