Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea’ Mckeehan.
Hi Andrea’, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Honestly, I never imagined that I would end up where I am today. Growing up, I always thought I would work in show business as an entertainer. I’ve always loved being creative, being around people, and having a career where I could express myself, so esthetics wasn’t necessarily the path I pictured for myself. That changed when I discovered skincare. I became really interested in the science behind the skin and started learning more about treatments, ingredients, and how different skin types respond to them. The more I learned, the more I realized there was a huge gap when it came to education and access to knowledgeable skincare professionals who truly understood Black and melanated skin.
As a Black esthetician, that became really important to me. There simply aren’t a lot of us, and there is still so much misinformation and lack of education surrounding darker skin tones—especially when it comes to acne, hyperpigmentation, scarring, chemical peels, and corrective treatments. I wanted to become someone who could provide that education and make people with melanated skin feel like their skin was actually being understood, rather than treated with a one-size-fits-all approach.
I started my business and continued investing heavily in my education, especially in corrective skincare and treatments that are appropriate for melanated skin. My journey hasn’t been completely linear. Like so many small business owners, I had to navigate setbacks, including stepping away from my business during the pandemic. But I never really let go of the vision.
Today, I’m the owner of The OC Facialist in Orange County, where I specialize in corrective, results-driven skincare, with a strong focus on acne, hyperpigmentation, texture, and healthy skin for melanated clients. I’m passionate about creating a luxury experience, but I’m equally passionate about education. I want my clients to understand their skin and leave feeling confident about how to take care of it—not just rely on me for a treatment.
Looking back, it’s funny that the girl who thought she was going to end up in show business found her way into skincare. In a lot of ways, though, it makes sense. I still get to be creative, connect with people, build something of my own, and help people feel good about themselves. I just found a different stage.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was having to leave a mentally and physically abusive marriage when my son was only two years old. I had to rebuild my life as a single mom while also trying to navigate motherhood and running a business at the same time.
There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of what the future would look like. I also had to step away from my business during the pandemic, which meant starting over yet again. But those experiences taught me a lot about resilience and trusting myself.
I’ve had to rebuild more than just a business—I’ve had to rebuild my confidence and my life. Everything I’ve gone through has made me even more determined to create something meaningful and to keep showing up for myself, my son, and the vision I have for The OC Facialist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the owner and esthetician behind The OC Facialist, a boutique skincare studio in Orange County specializing in corrective and results-driven skin treatments. I work primarily with concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven texture, and overall skin health, with a strong focus on melanated skin.
One of the things I’m most passionate about is creating better access to skincare education for Black and brown clients. There aren’t a lot of Black estheticians, and there’s still a real need for professionals who understand how melanated skin can respond differently to certain treatments. I’m constantly educating myself so I can provide treatments that are both effective and appropriate for my clients’ skin.
What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with my clients. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I take the time to really look at the skin, understand what’s going on, and create a treatment plan based on the individual—not just what’s trending.
I think what sets me apart is that I care just as much about education as I do the treatment itself. I want my clients to understand their skin, see real results, and feel confident taking care of it long after they leave my studio.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
