Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Jett.
Hi Aly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For about four years when I was a kid, I would try to write lyrics and the product would be horrible to be honest. As expected though, I was about 11 when I started. When I was 15, I finally got the hang of writing with my first official song, Just Alone. This was the song I played at my first show back at The Legacy Room in Chino, which is out of business now unfortunately. It gave me a start for performing live though. I released songs through the pandemic, including an EP and about four singles. Today I am finally happy with where I’m at, which is having the purpose of being a good friend to my fellow musician friends and supporting their music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Around the time of my first gig, I was also struggling with my mental health, being diagnosed with depression which would eventually lead to being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I had no idea this was happening at the time and became so overwhelmed that within the next two years, I would stop and start again with music. Eventually after a terrible breakup, I bought myself a MacBook Pro on my credit card (it’s paid off now thank goodness), and with some newfound confidence started to record my music with a real interface and a real microphone. In early 2021, I stumbled with dealing with BPD on my antidepressants and checked into the hospital, not sure how I could come back to music once again and I thought I was done. Music wasn’t getting the traction I wanted it to, but after many therapy sessions and self-reflection, I released a new song in October 2021.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d say I specialize in creating original music and performing it live with a loop pedal (which I didn’t know was an impressive skill to have until recently). I’m most proud of myself for becoming a better person and being interested in others and their creative endeavors. What sets me apart from others is that I’ve embraced my story and have worked to make sure I live a different tale compared to my predecessors (that being my parents). I only want to be better than the person I was yesterday and being a supportive energy in the Southern California music scene gives me immense joy.
How do you think about happiness?
When I sing, I feel like I’m sharing the most valuable side of myself. I don’t have to be a perfectionist when I don’t want to be. It’s an action of self-love for me now. During my hospital stay early in 2021, I realized it was a necessary coping skill when one of the people I met there started singing “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele, and I knew the lyrics to the song, so I began singing it with him and everyone was surprised that I had that ability. I don’t necessarily identify myself as talented, but I do feel happy when someone lets me know that I’m good at the thing I love to do.
