Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Vargas.
Hi Alexandria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Art has always been part of my life, but in 2019 I began creating more seriously. A friend I met in 2018, who is also an artist (shoutout to @radiumhearts), played a huge role in encouraging me to start selling my work. That encouragement helped me take my art beyond a personal practice, and in 2023 I began vending and sharing my work face-to-face. Since then, my journey has been shaped by growth, community, and staying true to my creative voice.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been smooth. Finding my art style was a big challenge and took about a year of trial and error before I felt truly connected to my work. I also struggle with finishing pieces. Some paintings have been sitting at about 25% complete for years. It’s something I’m still working through, but it’s taught me a lot about my creative process and how I grow as an artist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create art with a moody, whimsical twist, often featuring sad clown girls and cats, many inspired by my own. That’s what people usually recognize me for: these melancholic clown characters and playful feline companions.
I’m proud of building my small art business from scratch and creating a style that’s really my own. What makes my work stand out is the combination of dark, whimsical elements and a personal, heartfelt touch. It’s art that people can connect with, collect, and enjoy in everyday life.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone starting out is to give yourself permission to experiment and make mistakes. Finding your style and what truly resonates with you takes time, and that’s completely normal. I also wish I had known how important it is to just start sharing your work, even if it feels imperfect at first. Each piece you create, each connection you make, and each small step you take helps you grow as an artist and as a business.
