Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbey Engel
Hi Abbey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A brief overview of my story is that I moved from a very small town in Wisconsin to Los Angeles almost exactly two years ago. I started out with absolutely NOTHING to do in the social media / marketing industry whatsoever. I was really just using social media for fun creativity. I originally moved to LA for modeling and acting. The one intention that I set and a promise I made to myself when I first moved, was to say yes to every opportunity that came my way. So I did, and now I am currently working on my career as a model/actress while also working as a freelance social media marketing manager and creative director.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, VERY far from smooth. It’s still a bumpy road every day. One of the biggest struggles I would say have been getting caught up in the competitive hustle culture out here. I (fortunately) from working in the social media industry, fell into being surrounded by some very successful people which was so inspiring, but also so hard to not compare myself to their success, status, and financial position. It really had me on a constant hamster wheel of non-stop running from one thing to the next thing, and to be honest I am still on that wheel. The comparison has been probably the hardest thing to try and overcome.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I kind of wear a lot of hats. I am a model, actress, social media manager, and digital creator. Day-to-day, I am doing all things creative, whether it’s creating content for multiple different brands, creating my own content for fun, coming up with creative shoot ideas for a new campaign, or submitting to self-tapes for acting and modeling jobs. I’ve been told by numerous people that I have a unique and aesthetic idea for art, and I think it shows most through my content creation. I think something I am most proud of is really just navigating through this new city and establishing something for myself. I hustle every single day whether it’s networking, or working on another passion project. I realize that my kind of work-ethic is somewhat rare.. I like to work, stay busy, and keep learning and growing every single day.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That there is never going to be a “right time” for anything. I’ve learned to just do it, to not wait around for what you want. I always found myself waiting it out and telling myself, “I’m not where I want to be yet, next month I will be.” But I realized that there is never going to be a right time. You will always find some excuse to not do the thing you want, because you fear it in a way.
