Today we’d like to introduce you to Wenqing Zhang.
Hi Wenqing, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up with a deep love for music and education. My journey began with classical piano training, and I performed actively throughout my early career—solo recitals, chamber collaborations, and concerto appearances—which shaped not only my musicianship but also my understanding of discipline, storytelling, and emotional connection through art.
That commitment eventually led me to pursue a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Claremont Graduate University, where I continued performing while refining my teaching philosophy. As I grew as a pianist and an artist, I also discovered a strong passion for education and community-building. These two identities—pianist and educator—came together naturally when I founded Golden Echo Academy, an after-school and music education center in the Ontario–Chino–Eastvale area.
What started as a small piano studio has now expanded into a multi-program academy offering music instruction, academic tutoring, language classes, and community events. Today, I continue to balance performance, academic research, and leading Golden Echo Academy. Whether I’m on stage or working with students, I’ve always been driven by the same thing: sharing what I love and passing forward the inspiration that music has given me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Balancing multiple roles has probably been the biggest challenge. While completing my DMA and continuing my piano performance career, I was also building Golden Echo Academy from the ground up. There were periods where I was teaching, practicing for concerts, handling administrative work, and managing a growing team all at the same time. But every challenge also pushed me to grow. I learned to be flexible, to problem-solve quickly, and to build systems that support both our teachers and students. Looking back, the difficult periods were also the most formative, and they made me more grateful for how far we’ve come today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a pianist and educator, my work combines performance with teaching. I specialize in classical piano and have built my artistic identity around expressive, storytelling-driven playing. Alongside performing, I lead Golden Echo Academy, where I design music programs and mentor students of different ages and levels.
What sets me apart is the blend of my performance background, academic training, and hands-on teaching experience. I bring a performer’s musical sensitivity, a researcher’s discipline, and an educator’s patience to all the work I do. I’m most proud of helping students grow—not only in technique, but in confidence and artistic expression—and of building a community where music feels both challenging and inspiring.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve learned that taking risks is often necessary when you’re building something meaningful. Starting Golden Echo Academy while finishing my DMA and continuing performance work was a major risk—I had no guarantee it would succeed, and the workload was overwhelming at times. But I believed in the purpose behind it, and that gave me the courage to move forward.
