Conversations with Sergio Salamanca Samper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Salamanca Samper.

Sergio Salamanca Samper

Hi Sergio, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Bogotá, Colombia. My music training started when I was seven, with Drum Lessons. I developed basic techniques and knowledge in Drum Set up to the age of 13 when I started official music theory and production lessons in EMMAT (Escuela de Musica Moderna, Audio y Tecnologia). EMMAT is a B.G.P (Berklee Global Partner) school located in Bogotá.

At the age of 13, I began producing electronic music and learning techniques and skills of music production, sound engineering and sound design; I also started to DJ in private events and in venues and developed my passion for the electronic music underground scene in Bogotá.

In 2016 I had the honor of being accepted by Berklee College of Music, where I started my Undergraduate Degree with a Major in Electronic Production & Design. In 2021 I also entered the Music Production & Engineering Major and completed a Minor in Commercial Record Production. I also had the opportunity to work in both Video Crew and Stage Crew in Berklee since Fall 2018 up to 2023.

On May 13, 2023 I obtained my bachelor’s degree and in one week, I will be moving to Los Angeles to start a new stage of my professional career as music producer, sound engineer, sound designer and DJ.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a musician is not an easy job. The best athletes are those who are in the best shape possible and on the best level both physically and mentally and they can learn how to improve and get better daily, and music is not any different than sports. To be a professional musician, you need to have the mental strength to believe in yourself and your craft and the value this might have in the world.

Music production and creativity is pointless without love and passion, you must work hard every day to improve and collaborate with other musicians, artists, engineers, and producers, and that may not be an easy task every single time. As a musician and as a producer, you need to be positive, perseverant, proactive, socially active, and respectful to others and their advice and experience, but you also must be confident in yourself and maintain a positive attitude and be of value to the project in any possible way. The best records produced in history are all team efforts, not an individual´s highlight.

It is very difficult to work on your music and believe in yourself without letting other people define you or judge you or even hate you, but as a musician you have to learn to take positive criticism and learn from it to improve the quality of your work; as a producer, you have to be objective and learn how to look at the bigger picture, details matter and they can make the difference, but people in this industry forget the bigger picture and the purpose of music, which is to convey emotion to people and to entertain people to help them live a better life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a drummer, music producer, sound engineer, sound designer, live performer, and DJ. I have multiple skills which can be useful in multiple stages of pre-production, production or post-production of music, film or media.

I also work as live sound engineer for bands, artists or venues and help bands present their shows with the best sound quality as possible.

As a drummer, I specialize in drum recording and I want to be known for my skills and ability to obtain the best recording possible of drummers in multiple genres. Being a drummer myself, I have more knowledge in the drum set techniques, tuning and maintenance of drum heads, which can be extremely useful in recording scenarios.

I have experience recording and mixing large bands as well as small or individual acts, I also have experience with recording techniques, patch bays, outboard gear, and knowledge of analog and digital consoles for recording and production. I can be of assistance to any producer/engineer in any stage of the production, and what I would like the most on this stage of my career is to collaborate and learn from others who are more experienced than me so that I can continue to improve my own work every day.

Any big plans?
On August 2, 2023, I will move to Los Angeles to start a new stage in my career as a music producer and sound engineer. I will be working as a freelancer producer, engineer, and sound designer in my own music as well as with other projects. My main goal is to collaborate with as many experienced artists and producers as possible. The best way to learn a craft and new skills is by learning from other experienced artists, musicians, producers and engineers, and the music industry in LA is one of the most important industries in the world for music production and engineering of music and film industry.

The biggest and most recognized and traditional recording studio spaces are in Los Angeles. I am looking forward to working in music recording and production, not only with experienced and talented musicians but to also work in such recognized studios that have witnessed the recording and production of some of the most important and successful records of all time.

I will also be working as a sound engineer for multiple events and services such as podcasts, musical theatre productions, band concerts, wedding bands, live performances, large/small concerts, exhibitions, conferences and/or church services to mention just a few examples.

I will also be working on DJ events and electronic music promotion of other artists from the US and Colombia and continue working on my own productions and career as a DJ and producer of electronic music.
