Conversations with Ruoyu Li

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruoyu Li.

Ruoyu Li

Hi Ruoyu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Guangzhou, China. I moved to the United States in 2013 for college. I got my bachelor’s degree in film production from the University of Utah and later went on to achieve a Master’s degree in Film and Media Art from Emerson College in Boston in 2021. Since then, I’ve moved out here in LA.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest part for me is working as a foreigner in this country, and being a Chinese made it worse; maybe it’s because China is the enemy to the US now,

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a freelance cinematographer, while also working as a personal assistant to talent managers. I’m mostly shooting narrative shorts, cosmetics commercials, and feature films. I also owns a boutique camera rental shop.

What were you like growing up?
I’m an introvert person growing up, and yet, I’m a funny man to my friends and people I feel comfortable around with. I like photography at a young age, I was taking photos of characteristic people on the street.
