Conversations with Mia Dawes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Dawes.

Mia Dawes

Hi Mia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As an advocate of creative expression, and a marketing student, it wasn’t until recently that I found a passion to integrate these two concepts. Ever since I was a kid, around the age of 7, I delved into many forms of creative expression, such as dance, music, and art. One that has stuck with me throughout my life was music. I still practice art and dance here and there, but I found myself wanting to get into the world of marketing through the use of creativity (an aspect of marketing that is very undervalued). It wasn’t until I started producing and mixing music that I realized I wanted to work with a record label. As a creator and aspiring music leader, I hope that my story and my goals can help and/or inspire anyone that is struggling to create a path that involves their passion for creativity. I also hope to bridge the gap between marketing and creativity since we desperately need creatives to fuel our marketing efforts. Moreover, throughout the experience of finding myself on a personal and professional level, I also realized the importance of hobbies and constantly learning new skills.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
On a surface-level view, it has been a smooth road. However, it has taken a lot of mental strength. I believe I am where I’m at in my professional/personal life and that my mindset has improved because I trained myself to get out of my comfort zone on many occasions. Of course, I couldn’t have done this without the help of my supportive family. A lot of what caused a shift in my mindset was the pandemic. Having to stay inside the house during the pandemic motivated me to explore parts of myself that I may have been avoiding (my creative side). The Covid-19 lockdown also was the fuel to my fitness journey that I am still in. Ever since Covid, I have been consistently lifting in the gym. It was also the motivation to the community I wanted to build for women at my college campus, University of San Francisco. Here, I launched a club chapter for Girl Gains Co., a national organization that aims to motivate and support women in the weight room. Along with the pandemic, losing one of my very good friends, who passed away 3 years ago, affected me immensely. It was hard having someone pass away during a lockdown, especially a friend I knew from childhood. He was a super-talented artist with a great outlook on life. I started to remind myself of how my dear friend viewed life, and I thought I could learn something from it and apply it into my own to honor him. These events were catalysts to the new mindset I developed.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m currently a graduate student at NYU majoring in integrated marketing with a concentration in brand management. I also work with a CPG Service company, and I get to apply my creativity into the social media marketing aspect of the business, which I enjoy. I hope to grow and later break into the music industry or have a creative/talent agency of my own. I also hope to DJ soon in NYC and bring people together through music. Most of all, I hope I can inspire someone to pursue what they love and enjoy regardless of society’s norms. I would like to add that I am still growing and learning myself, but I intend to spread the encouragement of learning new skills throughout life.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
It’s important to stay true to yourself. This means not being afraid to create or explore hobbies/activities you’ve always been interested in. With that, this exploration can also give more direction to one’s life on a personal or professional level.
