Conversations with Maurice Tyson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Tyson.

Hi Maurice , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My mother’s name was Myrtle Elizabeth Joseph and she was born and raised in St. Croix in the Virgin Island. She learned among being in a family of 8 siblings to cook and bake from scratch. You see, she came from an era that didn’t have super box stores like Walmart, Target or Costco. She came to NYC aspiring to become a nurse and that was her dream. She worked as an registered nurse at Metropolitan Hospital for 35 years. She also brought her book of recipes and taught me the gift of cooking at an early age.
When she passed away 25 years ago, I didn’t know where to turn. Months went by and I was still processing it.
The turning point was during the holidays, I didn’t feel motivated to shop, so instead I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies, boxed them and shipped them out. The reaction was nothing short of amazing. One friend suggested I should open my own store. It gave me food for thought and told myself I was happier keeping my mother’s memory alive by baking for others and seeing their joy.
When you decide to choose Miss Myrtle’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, the primary recommendation is, of course, the signature chocolate chip cookie itself. In a city full of culinary distractions, there is something deeply rewarding about choosing a product that focuses on perfecting a single, classic item. These cookies are worth choosing because they represent a high-tier version of a childhood favorite—elevated by gourmet ingredients and a small-batch process that ensures every cookie is as good as the last. They are the ideal choice for someone who appreciates the “artisanal” touch but wants the comfort of a familiar flavor.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy but I’ve meditated for quite some time on what would make my brand stand out. Early on, I studied the genre of small business baking. I became observant and aware of mom-and-pop bakeries, vendors selling their products at farmers markets and the impressions they made with people. I took specific courses to become astute to bringing the most of my goals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My background was in health education, and I’ve retired from the NYC Board in Education 3 years ago. This gave me the opportunity to utilize my experience and expand my knowledge to people regarding why certain snacks don’t have to be loaded with processed, bioengineered ingredients.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My relationship with the love of my life. She’s been an entrepreneur all of her life and involved in media and an inspiration to me. She’s pivoting and is producing a documentary. That’s what makes me happy – manifesting a vision and seeing it come true.
