Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Vella.
Hi Luke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I could talk I always said I wanted to be a music artist, I tried a variety of sports and extra circular activities and none stuck, until my mum finally put me in dance classes and that’s where it all changed. After a few years of multiple dance shows and performances in my hometown in Malta I got the opportunity to train with a UK performing arts college, who then offered me a full scholarship to attend. Talk about a dream come true!
I trained in Musical Theatre but my love and hope was to always make my own music. After graduating I auditioned and worked in multiple jobs across the industry, music videos with other artists, the West End and tours and even some feature films but something still didn’t feel right.
Until I came across a Masters degree in Songwriting and well the rest is history. Doing this I finally felt like I was where I was supposed to be and working with other artists and songwriters, gave me the courage to do so also. And that’s where I started working on my own music properly, writing, co-producing and finding myself as an artist and my sound.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think many people have had smooth roads and honestly I wouldn’t want it either, although a bit of extra help sometimes wouldn’t be a bad thing haha!
It’s been a journey for sure, full of ups and downs, the worst part of it however is when I end up in a place of questioning if I will ever make it or if this is even for me, it takes so much of my passion and love for my craft away. For me that’s the worst struggle and it’s usually a result of work and financial worry, along with having little to no support from any industry professionals that could help steer me a bit more in the right direction.
Thankfully I always manage to find that passion and drive again, and usually from the worst bits, the best bits come about. New music, new themes, new ideas and a better vision of myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a music artist, and I create what I like to call sultry dance pop music. When it comes to my music I bring together my experiences and thoughts and fuse them with sick beats and sounds that will make you dance but also give you something you might need to hear, a fearless and unapologetic queer take on life and what it throws our way.
I have recently and independently just released my debut EP, ‘My Divine Chaos’ which has been in the works for over a year and I’m honestly so proud of the project, but also of myself. Since I was young I always thought I needed a label to do such a thing and have loads of backup, and it was only about a year ago that I realised I could and would do it all myself. And here we are, apart from that the response has been great, and to know people are listening, relating and dancing to your music is just what it’s all about.
I’m also very proud of the very small team of creatives I have managed to bring together around me that help me create and to bring this together.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
To be honest I find networking quite daunting sometimes especially in person but that is where social media comes in. I have made nearly all my connections via social media, in fact most of my collaborators aren’t even anywhere close to me in distance haha!
So my advice here is just reach out to anyone and everyone, there is literally nothing to loose. The worst thing they can do is not reply and that just means that you’re not meant to work together.
