Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Rodriguez
Hi Lauren, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Downey High School in 2015, I left California to pursue my journalism studies at the University of Oregon. (Sco Ducks!) During my 4 years in college I fell in love with storytelling whether that was in front of the camera, behind, or in the studio. I joined “Duck TV” the university’s news program that aired on local television. I started pitching stories and reporting out on the field, then eventually anchoring the desk and leading the program as Executive Producer my senior year. And because I love creating, I also co-hosted and produced a weekly pop culture radio show on KWVA 88.1 and was interning at the local ABC station as well. I graduated in 2019 (jobless) from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, with an emphasis in broadcast. I traveled back home to sunny Los Angeles where I began my career. In school we were always taught that if you wanted to make it in LA TV news then you’d have to “pay your dues” in a smaller city/market first. But, I couldn’t stand the idea of not being home after 4 years away… so I took the chance and it led be down the radio route. I earned my first job in radio as a promotions and contesting coordinator to get my foot in the door. But while I was upstairs at the computer, all this fun stuff was happening in the studios right downstairs. It was a big no no to go mingle with the DJ’s, but because in radio we’re taught to “ask for forgiveness later” I decided that there would be no harm in staying after my working hours to just ask questions and learn. So everyday for a few months, I would work my 9-5 then go hang in the studio and shadow from 5-9pm. 6 months later, I was a content producer at the company’s LGBTQ+ radio station but that didn’t last long because Covid hit. During the pandemic, I worked smaller jobs as a production assistant on television shows until eventually finding my way back to the radio world in media sales until an Executive Producer position opened up at 94.7 The Wave – the same station where legendary Frankie Ross, Pat Prescott, and Deborah Howell had been leading for decades. The Wave had always been so special to me because as a kid it was one of the only english radio stations my grandparents listened to – in fact they always had it on in their kitchen. Being in radio the last 5 years has taught me not only a lot about the industry and the people in it, but a lot about myself as well. There’s so much I want to experience, create and share with the world and although I’ve had an amazing fulfilling career thus far, I know this is just the beginning. I turn 28 on March 18th (shoutout all my pisces queens) and this really feels like a new chapter. I just launched my podcast “Hollywood LoDown” where I talk about all things happening in pop culture, entertainment news, and interview special guests! You can check out my latest episode with Alien:Romulus and Smile 2 actor Trevor Newlin streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Youtube!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. On top of the pandemic, production leaving Los Angeles, and “radio being a dying industry,” it hasn’t been the prettiest or nicest. There’s a lot of different personalities and industry politics which can be the biggest struggle, but this definitely has taught me to grow tough skin. Especially as a hispanic lesbian, I just wish there were more opportunities for minorities to shine.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a pop culture journalist, host, and content creator with a background in radio and digital media. I specialize in breaking down trending topics in entertainment, music, and celebrity news in a way that’s engaging, insightful, and easy to digest. My work blends journalism, storytelling, and social media strategy to create content that not only informs but sparks conversation.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with audiences—whether it’s through deep dives into industry trends, celebrity interviews, or real-time reactions to breaking news. I have experience producing high-impact content across platforms, from radio and podcasts to YouTube to TikTok, and I’m always finding new ways to evolve with the industry.
I’m most proud of my resilience, the career I’ve built in the entertainment space and the impact of my content. Whether it’s interviewing icons like Ice Cube and Alicia Keys or growing my digital presence from scratch, I thrive on creating moments that resonate with people. At the end of the day, I want to share stories that matter and make pop culture coverage smarter, more engaging, and more authentic.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, to me, means feeling happy and at peace while doing what you love every day, surrounded by people who genuinely care about you and want to see you thrive.
