Conversations with Jasmine Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Brown.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey and the beauty industry began when I was about 16 years old. Growing up, I had several aunts who were hairstylist, I was always fascinated by the beauty industry, especially because I loved getting my own hair done regularly. ironically I never imagined hair styling will become my full-time career.

I attended Los Angeles trade technical College, where I earned
my cosmetology certificate in 2006 while I was initially pursuing a different career path spending six years working for the Los Angeles police department. After having my two daughters in 2007 and 2010, I eventually made the decision in 2012 to leave my job become an entrepreneur and pursue cosmetology full-time. I wanted to be hands on with my daughters!!

I started as a booth renter at Design Studio 21 in Los Angeles, near rodeo and Crenshaw. After approximately two years, I was given the opportunity to manage another salon Dior’s in Inglewood while it’s owner relocated out of the state. That experience taught me the valuable lessons about running a business and ultimately prepared me to open jazzy Chics Hair Studio in 2016.
For eight years, I owned an operated my own salon experiencing the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Along the way, I even took on the challenge of renovating and remodeling my salon myself. I also had the opportunities to work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry style Hair for Music, videos, television, production, and films. I’ve worked with several celebrities and even receiving Head Stylist credit on a movie directed by Wayne Stamps in 2017

Throughout my career I’ve become known for my passion for healthy hair care. My specialty is restoring and maintaining healthy hair , promoting length retention, and helping clients achieve their goals. My clients often tell me that I have “growing hands“ which is one of the greatest compliments I can receive as a hairstylist. I’ve also expanded my brand by selling Hair “Jazzy Bundles”,creating my own natural hair product Retention Hair Growth Serum,, along with Jazzy Chics merchandise and hair bonnets.

One of my proudest, accomplishment, however, has nothing to do with owning a salon. It’s what my career has allowed me to provide for my children.

As a single mother of two daughters, I built my livelihood almost entirely throughout hair styling. I’ve been able to provide a comfortable lifestyle for my girls and put both of my daughters through private school. My oldest Jaelah graduated as Valedictorian from Serra high school in Gardena and is currently a sophomore at UCLA majoring in biology. My youngest Janelle was also Valedictorian at her previous school and is currently a junior as Sarah high school preparing for her own college journey.

People sometimes underestimate Cosmetology or Cosmetologist as a profession, but my career has allowed me to build a business support my family and create opportunities for my children. What some may not consider “real job“ has been the foundation of everything I’ve built.

In 2024 after eight years of salon ownership, I made the intentional decision to transition into a private salon suite in Carson, California. I wanted to step away from the daily demands of managing a full salon, reconnect with my passion for hairstyling and take the time to reevaluate my long term vision.

As I look to 2027, I’m excited about what I’m building behind the scenes. I can’t reveal too much just yet, but I’m working towards what I hope will be my most ambitious chapter yet. If there’s one thing my journey has taught me is that Success doesn’t always follow a straight path. Sometimes you have to take a different direction to reach an even greater destination so embrace the detour. In the words of the late great Nipsey Hussle “ I don’t wanna be validated by nobody’s opinion I wanna be validated by my process. I know I worked hard. I know that I gave my all to something.”

Sincerely,
Jasmine

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been smooth. I went through several highs and lows of being an entrepreneur, managing people dealing with different people. Personalities and challenges maintaining the overhead of a salon while raising my children and maintaining my household bills off my talents alone is not for the weak!!! Being an entrepreneur our money is not guaranteed as a stylist. We have slow seasons several times I’ve wanted to give up, but my passion for my craft, my daughters and my faith keep me going

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Absolutely I believe you have to always take that leap of faith,
trust God always you never know what’s on the other side. If you don’t take that risk!! TRAP I used to say I’m at the trap when I was working TAKE RISK AND PROSPER that’s the motto
