Today we’d like to introduce you to Hermosa Atkins.

Hi Hermosa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey begins as a child with a natural calling for the spotlight. I’ve always been considered vibrant, multi-talented and full of tricks. Growing up I didn’t get to obtain a lot of pictures of myself so once I got my first phone at 18 I started taking pictures. I went through a lot of awkward phases along the way of course as I began finding my own style and internet presence. I’ve become known for rocking natural aesthetics and hairstyles with minimal touch ups or makeup. My style is constantly changing depending on my mood or what I’m trying to promote. As a single mother of 2 children I’ve been determined not to let my circumstances keep me from my goals and ambitions. I devote my time using my face as my brand that spreads across several categories. Music, visual art, modeling to name a few. My music alone has invited many opportunities for photoshoots with various local photographers and videographers who see the vision. I have remained creatively inspired despite life’s challenges with rising living costs, a terminally ill child, my professional career in the medical field and limited resources. I genuinely find joy in the element of creating regardless of the art form. It’s all a piece of me. It all relates to my journey. I want people to feel and appreciate conceptual art in its many forms.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge of course is translating the inspiration from the source which is often trauma in a way that is conceptual. Getting the confidence in myself to like what I see and the vision being created with the resources I have as well. Self limiting habits are literally the enemy within telling you you don’t deserve the blessings on the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a painter, tattoo apprentice, model, singer/songwriter, rapper, model and content creator. I often mix the presentation of my gifts for the exposure. I may post a reel of my music with my paintings featured in the background, or post a photoshoot with my own music in the background. I’m talented at all of these things and have been recognized locally for them. I was one of 5 finalists in the Kansas City People’s Choice Awards for best visual artist and was initially nominated for 3 different categories. What sets me apart is the fact I carry a heavy load personally. There have been times I’ve gone public about my struggles, mental health, my children and traumatic experiences I’ve been through. What people relate to with my art is the raw authenticity. I’m not trying to be the best artist, but a real relatable artist. To articulate the things my peers struggle to express, visualize or put into words. I get up everyday and work multiple jobs, and always have a new goal, project, side quest and testimony. Everything ain’t picture perfect no matter how it appears on the outside that I may be holding up. I’m human. And I embrace that.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as finding fulfillment in what you do and love in doing it for who or what you do it for. Success for me would be creating a soft life or adventure, art and wonder for me and my children doing what I love.
