Conversations with Gianna Bonilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianna Bonilla.

Hi Gianna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing nails at 14 years old. What started as a hobby quickly turned into my passion — and eventually, my career. I owe so much of that to my amazing mother, who showed me that it’s possible to work in the beauty industry and thrive from it.

Nails have always fascinated me. Specifically the colors and creativity. It’s calming and soothes me. In fact, my mom actually taught me my colors using nail polish bottles; it was the only way I was able to remember.

One of the most meaningful parts of my journey is my Auntie Jerina. When I was 13 I bought a $6 acrylic kit from Walmart. She quickly offered up her hands so I could practice. It turned out awful and I immediately gave up. I couldn’t even do more than one finger. That was the first time I ever held an acrylic brush. She’s no longer here with us, but that memory lives with me forever. That was the first loss I’ve ever experienced and it was hard. I feel honored that something I did with her turned out to be my career.

Today, I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and even more excited for the future. My career started with love, curiosity, creativity, and the support of strong women around me — and this is what continues to fuel my work in the beauty industry

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every journey has obstacles, but pushing through them is what makes a difference. Growing up I faced bullying and self-doubt. That didn’t go away when I started my business. I was mocked and ridiculed. They didn’t believe I could succeed and make an honest living. My nail name became a source of ridicule— so much so that i considered changing it. I’ve even had people openly say they would do everything in their power to make sure I fail.

Doing nails gave me a way to break out of my shell and exceed beyond the hurt, bullied seven-year-old I once was. Healing wounds this deep wasn’t easy, but once I did, I excelled in all aspects.

My story is proof that believing in yourself can turn challenges into success.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a nail technician, nail artist, and mentor specializing in nail art and enhancements. I offer gel X, acrylic, structured manicures, and professional trainings. I’m known for my acrylic nail classes and stand out designs.

But im more than just a nail tech— I build genuine connections with my clients. I’m someone they can talk to and confide in. It’s not just the nails, it’s the comfort and trust. This keeps my clients coming back.

I’m proud that some of my sets have been showcased on Pinterest and recreated online. While others sell press on dupes of my design, I’m truly honored. I see it as proof that my creativity inspires others and sets trends in the industry.

What matters most to you?
Family has been the backbone of my success. In the early days of my career, I sometimes ran out of supplies mid-service. Having my parents or partner step in to help was a lifesaver and a true blessing. Beyond the practical support, they’ve been my cheerleaders through every hard time. Lifting me up during moments of discouragement. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
