Conversations with Frank Zavala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Zavala.

Hi Frank, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when my son was born 6 years ago. I wanted to buy a camera to take as many photos as possible, and make lasting memories with him and my wife. I never attended school for photography, nor did I ever have any experience with it. I just basically taught myself, learned the craft, and continued to perfect it. What started with taking photos of my son, pets, and nature, turned into a passion that continued once I began taking portraits of people. Then the rest, as they say, is history.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a great learning experience. The technical side of photography, learning the camera, the settings, lighting, composition, was definitely challenging at first. Once that area was polished, the rest, such as angling, posing, and executing the shot became so much fun and exciting with every shoot. The ups and downs, the yes’ and no’s. It’s been well worth it. There is always something new to be learned along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a school bus driver during the week, and as a portrait photographer on the weekends. I’m most proud of the fact that, despite my job, which I’m 100% grateful for, I still get to do my passion, and continue to move closer to achieving my goals. Photography is such a versatile and subjective art form. There are so many incredibly talented photographers and creatives in this field. From the new up & comers, to the well established veterans. Everyone brings something unique and innovative to the table.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Absolutely love the scenery in L.A., the scenic rides along the beaches, the views and the weather. However, the infamous L.A. traffic, that’s a whole different story lol.
