Today we’d like to introduce you to Eden Passante
Hi Eden , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to creating Sugar and Charm has been one of resilience, creativity, and passion. Growing up in a small coastal California town, I didn’t have a treasure trove of family recipes or memories of cooking alongside my mother or grandmother. Instead, I found solace in baking, crafting, and art. Sculpting clay figures, experimenting with cake decorating, and taking every art class became my joyful escapes. These creative outlets gave me a sense of control and pride and sparked a passion for turning simple ingredients into something beautiful. At 18, I moved to Los Angeles. Eventually, I earned a Family and Consumer Sciences degree, “Home Economics,” which gave me the foundation to combine my love for food, design, and entertainment.
In 2010, I launched Sugar and Charm, which started as a wedding blog but quickly grew into a platform for sharing my favorite recipes, entertaining tips, and DIY ideas. I wanted to create a space where anyone could feel inspired to host with style, whip up simple yet elegant dishes, and create unforgettable gatherings. For me, entertaining is all about making people feel welcome and loved through thoughtful touches, a beautifully set table, a charming cocktail, or a cozy family movie night under the stars. Publishing my first book, Entertaining with Charm, feels like such a full-circle moment, celebrating everything I love about hosting and the joy of bringing people together.
This journey has been a “lovely and challenging roller coaster.” With over a decade of experience, hundreds of recipes, and collaborations with amazing brands, I feel deeply grateful for the career I’ve built. Through Sugar and Charm, I can share my passion for creating charm every day, whether it’s through a dessert, a gathering, or a heartfelt moment. My mission has always been to inspire others to embrace life’s simple pleasures and celebrate the beauty in connection, creativity, and love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road! Starting Sugar and Charm in 2010 was so different from running it in 2015, and things have evolved quickly. It can be hard to keep up. There are so many aspects of running this small business that I don’t usually talk about. The behind-the-scenes work, like SEO, strategizing, and trying to break algorithms, isn’t glamorous or fun. When you feel like you’re getting ahead, you can fall back a few steps, especially with Google and its constant changes. It’s exhausting, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve always kept up with the speed of things as much as I should have.
I struggle a lot with balancing everything. Life is so short, and I want to fully live it now, especially with my kids growing up quickly. At the same time, this work takes so much of me; it’s easy to get caught up working 24/7 and still feel like you’re not making a dent. It’s this constant tug-of-war between chasing my goals and ensuring I’m present for what truly matters. I’ve learned that while pushing forward is essential, it’s also okay to pause and soak in those fleeting, beautiful moments with my family.
Through all the ups and downs, though, I’m incredibly grateful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I wear so many hats running Sugar and Charm. I’m a content creator, SEO specialist, email marketing wizard, photographer, prop and food stylist, baker, party planner, entertaining expert, and even recently learning more about investing… the list feels endless! What I specialize in and what people know me for is being an author and entertaining expert, inspiring others to host at home, and sharing the magical parts of my life like my garden, gatherings, and celebrations. I create recipes, delicious cocktails, baked goods, and fun, entertaining ideas to share with the world, all while encouraging people to bring charm and joy into their everyday moments.
What sets me apart is my style, my expertise, and the 20 years of experience I bring to this business. My work blends creativity, elegance, and practicality, making entertaining approachable and memorable. I’m proud of so much, especially the career I’ve built that allows me to live my dream. This job fuels my passions and gives me the flexibility to be with my kids and family, who are my greatest pride and joy. I’ll always be grateful for the fact that I’ve built a business I love while being present for my family.
I’m also proud of the perspective I’ve gained along the way. I deeply appreciate the importance of celebrating today, traveling, and being present in the moment. Looking back (so far), I can honestly say I have no regrets about the life I’ve lived, and I give a lot of credit to my work for that. It’s allowed me to create a life I love, one that’s rooted in creativity, connection, and making every day just a little more magical.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has definitely played a role in my life and business, though I think it’s only one part of the equation. I absolutely believe in luck. I feel lucky to have been born in California, in the United States and lucky for so many reasons. I was fortunate to start Sugar and Charm at the very beginning of social media, which gave me a head start in this industry. That lucky timing definitely helped. But I also believe luck is just the starting point. It’s what you do with it that matters. If you’re prepared when luck strikes, that’s where the magic happens.
That said, my journey hasn’t always been fueled by good luck. My childhood was turbulent, surrounded by challenges like mental illness, drug use, and abandonment. Those weren’t lucky cards, and they shaped a lot of who I am today. I had to work incredibly hard to overcome those circumstances and carve out a different path for myself. My success didn’t just fall into my lap, it took grit, resilience, and a strong drive to create something out of nothing.
I’ve also been lucky with the people who have come into my life and helped me. Their support and encouragement made a difference. But even with that luck, it would have been hard to get to where I am without ambition and the determination to keep going. Luck can open doors, but it’s what you do with the opportunities you’re given and the ones you create for yourself, that truly makes the difference.
