Charlie Gudgeon

Charlie Gudgeon is a Director, Writer, and Actor who was born in Toronto and raised in Victoria, BC. He’s a graduate of Vancouver Film School’s Directing stream, where he was able to write and direct numerous short films, including the prestigious “Final Project”. Over the last decade, Charlie has been able to write, direct, and produce over ten short films. His films have gone to multiple international festivals. Two of his shorts have won awards with distinction and Canada Shorts, his most recent film won Best Horror Short at the Hollywood Blood Horror Festival, and one of his projects won the Victoria Film Festival FilmCan award. He started his career as a child actor and has been active in the Film and Television industry in a variety of departments for over twenty years. Charlie focuses on stories that blur the lines of truth and fantasy. He loves exploring themes from old fairy tales and adding his off-beat, raw, and honest modern interpretation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a teenager, I lost my mother, which was (as you can imagine) an immense struggle. After the loss of my mother, I traveled the world and worked many different jobs, and searched heavily for a direction. I found storytelling as a way to express myself. Four years later, my brother died, which was emotionally devastating. The pain of losing a loved one sinks so, so deep. Depression and bleak grief ensued for many years. Eventually, I was able to channel the grief into my stories and performances. I’m now attempting to work through the pain of loss through exploring themes of grief in my films.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a film and television Director. I wrote and actor as well. I’m a filmmaker and most importantly a storyteller. I’m experienced in commercials, music videos, sketch comedy, short films, TV, and feature films. I specialize in directing genre pictures that blur the line between true and false. I’m most proud of frequent collaborators that time and time again, amaze me with their creativity and prove to be the best parts of any project. I’m passionate and personal, I never pull a punch with my stories and try to stay honest and unique in my direction.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’m dyslexic. So as a kid, I grew up in the “special education class”. This gave me a chip on my shoulder and a fiery desire to hustle the competition. I’m friendly and loud, and I love people.
