Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Ortiz.
Hi Brian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During my early teen years I began playing in small bands with friends and performing at local shows. Those experiences eventually led me to realize that I wanted I wanted to move beyond simply playing in other people’s bands and begin creating something entirely of my own. I began to release music under the name Melt Mars and the rest is history.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
t’s been a little difficult trying to balance Melt Mars as both a machine and an entity, while also being able to lead a full group. I’m still figuring out how to walk the line and make both sides feel authentic. When I first released music as Melt Mars, people naturally viewed it as a band. Like if it was a group of people creating together. But that was never really the reality. Then when I started being more upfront about everyones roles, feelings get hurt and things become complicated. So I think now I’m just taking more responsibility for defining what Melt Mars actually is. Is it a band? A solo project? A machine? I honestly don’t know. People want you to be a certain thing they made you out be in their heads and others want to come in and “help” or just be a part of the machine but it ends up disrupting the natural flow of things. I find things to be smooth and gravy when my only focus is to just try to make the best music that I genuinely enjoy and hope that others find joy in it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I guess I’m known for making music, and I’m proud of the fact that it’s lasted this long. I don’t take it for granted that people still care about what I’m creating and continue to listen. I feel like I’m still uncovering what that is, and I know there’s more for me to find, build, and push toward. Although I feel like my fans connect to the music, Los Angeles always makes you feel like a small fish in a big pond. I want to be able to build a strong following here in the city to call it a home.
What are your plans for the future?
I think the next endeavor is touring. I’ve never done it before, and there’s something really exciting about finally hitting the road and bringing Melt Mars to different cities. I’d love to experience the different scene, meet new people, and see what the music feels like outside.
