Today we’d like to introduce you to Blaise Booth.
Hi Blaise, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So I picked up my dad’s camera he’d use to shoot my football games in high school and college. I’d take it around when I’d hang with my friends, go on adventures, etc. Once I stopped playing football, I decided to stick with videography/photography and see what I could do with it. It was something I just liked doing and capturing memories of me and my friends. Then people started asking me to do simple photoshoots and kinda got the ball slowly rolling with that. Started doing any type of work for free to build a portfolio and slowly built my freelance business up. 6-7 years later, here I am still learning, evolving, and loving what I do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly not until the past few years, I hit a plateau. No jobs, kind of lost passion for it, and simply just didn’t enjoy doing it. Took on a normal job and started thinking what am I going to do from here on out with my life. But thinking back on it, I stuck with it and didn’t give up on something I love doing so much.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance videographer and editor. Anything from music videos to weddings to music festivals, I will take any job that’s offered to me. Everyone that grew up with me just knew me as the kid that carried around the camera everywhere I’d go. Not so much now as before, but still people will joke around and take my camera and say “Hey look, I’m ____ Shootz, ” whatever name they’d be. It’s pretty funny. But I also work for Poor Boyz Productions. Huge shoutout to Johnny Decesare. Guy is a legendary cinematographer, producer and director. I’ve known him before I even got into doing this stuff and asked if I could work for him years later. I’ve learned so much from working under him and shot stuff I’ve always dreamed of shooting (like Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch). We do a ton of surfing work, including World Surf League, Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch, tv commercials, etc.
I feel like my versatility is my biggest asset. From being able to be a camera op, to drone op, to editor it really helps with what jobs I can take. I am proud of my work and am nowhere close to where I want to be. Forever learning and taking in as much information I can from all the other amazing creatives I work with.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
My father was an NFL player, so growing up football was all I knew. And it was honestly the only future I had in mind. That’s all I cared about 24/7. Six out of seven days a week, it was something football-related.
Never really thought I had a created side. I guess more of because I never really did anything that triggered that part of my brain until I started getting into photography and videography. I’m so grateful that I found another passion after ending my football career. Gave me another outlet on life and now can’t see myself doing anything else.
