Conversations with Billy Kornfeld

Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Kornfeld.

Hi Billy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our company started 40 years ago, in 1986, to help me spend less time on the road as a Bekins driver. As our family grew, I wanted to be home more, so my wife and I decided that starting our own moving company was the best way to do so.

We began with just one truck and an office in our garage. Today, we have a wonderful team—including some of our own children—a full fleet of trucks, and an office with a climate-controlled warehouse for client storage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Right now, one of our biggest challenges is the rising cost of operating a moving company, along with a changing industry where shortcuts and moving scams have unfortunately become more common.

We’ve chosen to hold the course. Our prices reflect the real cost of properly paying, training, and insuring our team, even when other companies can undercut us by cutting corners or not providing the same protections for their employees. We trust our crew, and they need to know that we value and take care of them.

We’ve also learned from challenges like the 1994 earthquake and COVID that there are some troubles you simply can’t budget for. What you can do is remain reliable, take care of your people and your customers, and keep providing the level of service you believe in. That’s what we’ve tried to do for 40 years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re a full-service moving and storage company, serving local and long-distance customers, but what we’re most proud of is the way we do the work. Our team is at the center of that. Many of our employees have been with us for years, and we’ve had the privilege of watching some of our younger employees grow into skilled movers, drivers, and trusted colleagues. Those relationships mean a great deal to us.

We’re also proud of the standards we maintain. We take care of our trucks, our equipment, and our facility, and our insulated storage space is attached to our office rather than being an anonymous warehouse across town. We also offer a more hands-on “valet” approach to storage. For clients who can’t bring their belongings to us, we can bring the storage vaults to them, carefully pad and wrap their items on-site, and load them directly into the vaults.

Ultimately, what sets Camelot apart is accountability. We know our customers, we know our team, and we take responsibility for the belongings entrusted to us. After 40 years, we’re proud that our reputation has been built on those relationships—not on taking shortcuts.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy? A lot of it comes down to the people and the little things. I still love getting out on the road. After all these years, there’s something satisfying about writing a quote for a relocation and then being the driver who actually handles the pickup and delivery from a home in Santa Clarita all the way to a new county or state, sometimes hundreds or thousands of miles away. I like seeing different parts of the country, finding something new along a route I’ve traveled before, and being anywhere but behind an office desk for a while.
I also really enjoy the people Camelot has brought into my life. Customers who started as clients have become friends, and I’ve had the privilege of watching employees grow from young guys into experienced movers and good friends.
And, on a much smaller scale, good coffee and donuts at the office make me very happy. There’s something about everybody gathering around the coffee pot, talking about the day, and sharing a box of donuts that reminds you that work is about more than the work itself.
