Conversations with Benedikt Sebastian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benedikt Sebastian.

Hi Benedikt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started with stories and pictures long before I had job titles for either. My mother was a writer, and I remember drawing on the floor while she worked at her typewriter and, later, her computer. She told us stories and took my sister and me to the theatre. I was fascinated by how something on a page could become a world you could actually step into.

That interest has followed me across acting, writing, filmmaking, photography and design. I have a bachelor’s in Visual Communication and a master’s in Creative Writing. Part of the reason I pursued the master’s was that I wanted to become better at developing projects: finding the story, shaping it and working with people to bring it to life.

Moving from South Africa to Los Angeles was a major part of that journey. Today, directing is where I’m putting more of my focus, alongside photography and video work. Writing gives me a foundation in story, acting gives me a performer’s perspective, and photography keeps me thinking about what a single frame can communicate. I want those experiences to feed the films I make.

I wrote and directed the short film The Uninvited Guest. Alongside my own projects, I enjoy the collaborative side of the work—getting into a room with people, working through an idea and figuring out what it could become. That’s the connection between the different things I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving from South Africa to Los Angeles and establishing myself as a creative has been one of the biggest challenges. There is a lot involved in finding your footing in a new place while continuing to make work.

There’s also the challenge of choosing where to put your energy. My interests span several disciplines, so the question is how to make that range serve the work. An idea needs more than enthusiasm: it needs structure, collaborators and the attention to carry it through. That’s the discipline I’m focused on—turning curiosity into finished work.

The work itself keeps asking you to improve. A screenplay needs another pass; a production has moving parts that need attention. I like learning and developing new skills, but I also want that learning to serve the projects. The aim is to give the work enough time and attention to become something I can actually share.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a director and visual storyteller working across film, photography and video. My directing brings together story, performance and visual design. I’m particularly interested in science fiction, fantasy and comic-book storytelling, and in developing the worlds those stories happen in.

On the development side, I enjoy taking an idea and finding its structure. My process usually begins with research: looking at a subject from different angles, finding recurring themes and identifying the spine of the story. From there, I work on structure and world-building. I also develop pitch decks and visual materials with filmmakers and production companies, including documentary projects.

The Uninvited Guest, which I wrote and directed, is a project I’m glad to have brought into finished form. My acting work includes The Naughty List of Mr. Scrooge, The Unsettling and Eye Without a Face. That experience on the other side of the camera informs how I direct.

In photography, my focus includes unit stills, portraits and editorial work. Unit stills connect that practice directly to filmmaking: paying attention to performance, atmosphere and the images that communicate a production’s story. Portraits and editorial work give me another space to explore people, character and visual narrative. Photography and video are substantial parts of my work, alongside the films I want to direct.
On a project, I can work through the script, shape the visual approach and talk with actors from a performer’s perspective. That’s where my range becomes useful.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Alongside my visual communication and creative writing degrees, I’ve studied improv and sketch at UCB, Second City and the Groundlings. That’s a different side of my background from what someone might see in a photograph or a film credit. Writing, performance and visual work have all been part of my education.
