Conversations with Alice Liu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Liu

Hi Alice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello everyone, My name is Alice Liu, an interaction & UX/UI designer. I have always believed that design is not only a way to solve problems but also a language that connects emotions and conveys warmth. Heart Guardian is the best embodiment of my wish. This pet heart health monitoring app is my independent work. From conception to design implementation, I am responsible for every stage. The inspiration comes from my concern about the relationship between pet health and human care – when pets are sick, owners often feel helpless, and our health monitoring tools are powerful but lack emotional warmth. I hope to create a product that can protect pet health and provide emotional support when owners are anxious through design.

To achieve this goal, I chose Klein Blue as the main color, symbolizing technology’s rationality and healing power. At the same time, I designed a cute dog IP, “Andy”. It is not only a data transmitter but also an emotional partner for users. Andy was inspired by my beloved dog, who accompanied me in countless important moments and gave me inspiration for my creation. I hope that through it, users can feel warmth and support while obtaining health data.

Heart Guardian has won multiple international design awards, including the 2025 NY Product Design Awards, the 2024 MUSE Creative Awards, and the 2024 American Good Design Awards. This encouraged me and made me more convinced that the power of design lies in touching people’s hearts.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge I faced in designing Heart Guardian was to complete all the links independently. From user research to interaction design, from visual presentation to brand building, each stage required me to invest a lot of time and energy. Within a limited time, I needed to complete the task efficiently and find the best balance between technical limitations and emotional expression. Another challenge was how to combine technology with humanistic care. Especially in the context of the rapid development of AI, the technical team is more concerned about the accuracy of the data, but I hope that the product can convey more warmth and companionship. Through multiple user surveys and repeated design iterations, I insisted on integrating emotional design into the product, and finally achieved an organic combination of technology and emotion. These challenges not only improved my design skills, but also made me more aware that excellent design is not only the realization of functions, but also a deep insight and response to user emotions.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Throughout my career, I have been working as a UX/UI product designer, leading and participating in multiple cross-domain projects, including the design and optimization of AI SaaS platforms, B2B/B2C applications, e-commerce platforms, advertising media, and healthcare smart products. These experiences have taught me how to balance user needs, business goals, technical implementation, and cross-team collaboration within a team, and have also made me realize the importance of emotional design in products.

In addition to teamwork, I am also very keen on independent creation. Heart Guardian is a work I completed completely independently. I was responsible for the entire process from user research to design implementation. This work makes me more convinced that the core of design is to create value for users and to bring people and products closer through delicate emotional expression. Whether it is teamwork or independent creation, I always believe that the power of design lies in using artistic creativity and details to bring warmth and healing to users, allowing people to experience tolerance and beauty in imperfection.

What makes you happy?
For me, there are many definitions of happiness, one of which is the moment when design can truly improve life and touch people’s hearts.
When doing user research for Heart Guardian, a user shared her story: her pet’s health problems made the whole family depressed, and this product not only helped her better manage her pet’s health but also gave her and her family emotional support and comfort through warm visual design and interactive experience. This story made me deeply realize that the value of design far exceeds the function itself. It can bring emotional connections and even change a family’s sense of happiness.

As a designer, happiness for me is to touch people’s hearts through the power of design, artistic creativity, and technology, making the world warmer and better, and also making people feel hope and security. This is the goal I have always pursued and the driving force that keeps me moving forward.
