Conversations with the Inspiring Allison Beck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Beck.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allison. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Olympia, Washington with my five siblings and my parents. I have wonderful memories of playing outside, eating fresh produce from my mom’s garden, baking cookies with my sisters, and always getting creative, whether that was with food, games, or art.

It wasn’t until late high school that I became really interested in nutrition. I was a year-round athlete, and I really struggled with my relationship with food. I eventually saw my physical and emotional health become negatively impacted by severely restricting what I ate and pushing my body too hard. I sought help but didn’t get the answers that I needed. It was this experience that encouraged me to get my degree in Food & Nutrition at Seattle Pacific University and later go through a holistic nutrition program as well.

Over the past year, I have been building a business that helps people live healthier, fuller lives. Through providing 1-on-1 nutrition counseling, teaching group cooking classes, and blogging recipes and food photography, I educate people on the importance of real food and nutrition.

My goal is to help people see how simple and freeing living a healthy life can be. Some days, you’ll find me in my kitchen testing a new recipe and taking food photos, and other days, you’ll find me meeting with a client in person or over the phone.

Has it been a smooth road?
My journey definitely hasn’t been easy. Food & nutrition is such a diverse field, and there are so many different directions you could go. One of my biggest struggles was figuring out the path of education that I wanted to take, and also studying nutrition for five years straight. There are a lot of different degrees and schools related to food & nutrition, and it was difficult choosing my own path when it wasn’t always clearly laid out in front of me.

My advice to other young women would be to talk to as many people as you can in the field that you’re interested in. Don’t be afraid to call or email people that are doing something similar to what you want to be doing. You’ll find people to talk to, and you’ll gain so much knowledge from their experience. Don’t hesitate to talk to as many people as you can find, and ask a lot of questions!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Fresh Roots Health story. Tell us more about the business.
Like I said before, I provide 1-on-1 nutrition counseling. I often work with women who struggle with low energy, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, or those who just want to feel better and eat better but don’t know where to start! I meet people where they’re at, and I provide them with the necessary tools to take steps toward a healthier life and freedom. I believe everything is connected, and what you eat is such an important piece of the puzzle.

I also have a passion for cooking, and I have a blog where I post recipes and food photos regularly. I want to help people see the joy and beauty of real food, and I hope to encourage my audience to get out to the farmer’s market and into the kitchen a little more. I also share my love of cooking through teaching group cooking classes, especially sourdough bread baking classes.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my simple approach to food and health. I want people to see the simplicity that can be found in living a healthy life, and not to be afraid of its restrictions. Whether it’s through creating recipes, teaching, or working with a client, I want everything to remain realistic and attainable. I want people to feel prepared to take control of their own food choices and health, one baby step at a time.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Remember that everything is an ebb and flow. There’s going to be really hard days, and there’s going to be really good days. Those good and bad days don’t define you. As you’re starting out your career, write out a vision statement of sorts. Write out your own story to yourself, why you’re doing what you’re doing, and where you dream of being in five years. Then read it often! It’s important to be reminded of what you’re passionate about sharing with the world, and why you’re doing what you’re doing.
