Community Highlights: Meet Tanisha Knox of Knox Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Knox.

Tanisha Knox

Hi Tanisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I’m Tanisha Knox—stylist and founder of Knox Salon in Los Angeles, where every texture is celebrated and every client leaves transformed.

When I opened Knox Salon in February 2005, I wasn’t just launching a beauty business—I was stepping into a purpose that had quietly been growing inside me for years.

The space I found on South Robertson Boulevard was a rundown, outdated clothing store in a part of Los Angeles many had written off. The block was quiet, overlooked, and far from the thriving corridor it is today. But when I walked through the door, I saw something different. I saw possibility. I saw roots I could plant—not just for myself, but for a community I deeply believed in. So I took a leap.

My vision was to create a space where beauty wasn’t just skin deep—a space rooted in wellness, intention, and community. I poured everything I had into it—physically, financially, emotionally. I gutted the interior, redesigned every inch, and built what would become Knox Salon: a modern Aveda Concept Salon grounded in holistic haircare, wellness, and creativity. I wanted it to feel different the moment you stepped inside—calm, inclusive, vibrant, alive. A place where people didn’t just feel pampered, but seen.

By then, I had already spent eight years in the beauty industry—working in salons, on fashion shows, photo shoots, television and film sets across the country. I held certifications from top educators and devoted myself to mastering the art and science of haircare. But I always dreamed of building something of my own—a space where beauty was not just about appearance, but about healing, self-expression, and culture. That dream came to life with Knox Salon.
From day one, my mission was to offer more than haircuts and color. I set out to bring a holistic approach to beauty—focusing on healthy hair, wellness, and self-care.

Looking back, opening the salon wasn’t just a business decision—it was the planting of a seed. I didn’t know then that I would also help spark the revival of an entire neighborhood.
I simply followed my passion, stayed true to my values, and trusted in the transformative power of beauty. Over time, the energy began to shift. Other new businesses began to move in. And by 2018, with support from initiatives like Mayor Garcetti’s South Robertson revitalization project, the area blossomed into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly hub. I’m proud that Knox Salon played a part in that transformation. What began as a personal dream became a catalyst for community change.

Now, with over two decades in the beauty industry, my journey has taken me everywhere—from the glitz of film and television to quiet, one-on-one transformations behind the chair. I’ve earned certifications, styled for shows, and worked with incredible people. But nothing compares to the joy I feel creating a safe, inspiring space for my team and clients—especially those from African American and multicultural backgrounds, who have too often been underserved in this industry.

At Knox Salon, we specialize in healthy, beautiful hair and restorative hair repair. We use low-ammonia Aveda color, advanced repair treatments, and customized cuts designed to meet each person’s unique needs. But beyond the services, it’s the energy that defines us. We believe in kindness, integrity, and caring for the whole person—not just their hair.
For me, success has never just been about what happens in the salon chair. It’s about service. Over the years, our team has donated time and talent to orphanages and nonprofits, mentored young professionals, and partnered with community events. Some of our most meaningful work has never been photographed or posted—it’s been shared quietly, behind the scenes, with love.

Now 20 years later, Knox Salon remains a place where people come to feel seen, empowered, and renewed. My team and I work hard to create a positive, inclusive environment where creativity thrives and guests leave not only looking amazing—but feeling restored. It’s a space of growth, joy, healing, celebration—and yes, incredible hair. But above all, it’s proof that dreams don’t happen overnight. They’re built slowly, moment by moment, with vision, sacrifice, and faith.
That old storefront on Robertson? It’s more than just a salon now. It’s a legacy. My legacy. And I hope it inspires others to plant their own seeds—right where they are, even if the soil doesn’t look promising.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

No, the path hasn’t always been easy.

People often see the beauty of Knox Salon today—our loyal clientele, the polished interior, the energy on South Robertson Boulevard—but what they don’t always see are the challenges behind the scenes. And trust me, there were plenty.

The Space Wasn’t Pretty—and Neither Was the Price
When I first walked into the storefront that would become Knox Salon, it was a mess—physically, structurally, and financially. It was an old, outdated clothing shop in a forgotten part of the city. The walls were crumbling, the plumbing was bad, the floors were uneven. There were moments I wondered if I had bitten off more than I could chew. But I kept going.

I Invested Everything—With No Safety Net
Transforming that space meant emptying my savings and taking on enormous financial pressure. I didn’t have a cushion, a backup investor, or a Plan B. I worked behind the chair while renovating the salon by hand. I learned how to budget down to the penny. There were months when I wasn’t sure if I’d make rent—but I kept showing up.

People Told Me I Was Making a Mistake
Choosing a “dead” part of the city confused people. I heard it all: “No one will come over there.” “It’s too risky.” “Why not open in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood?” But I believed in the neighborhood—and I believed that beauty and excellence didn’t have to exist only in trendy zip codes. I knew we could build something beautiful here, and I was right.

Being a Black Woman Entrepreneur Came With Its Own Set of Hurdles
Navigating funding, negotiating leases, and being taken seriously in business settings wasn’t always easy. I had to be twice as prepared, twice as sharp, and always gracious. But I also learned to own my power, to speak clearly about my value, and to stop shrinking to fit into rooms that weren’t made for me. Eventually, I started building my own.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Knox Salon?

“The difference in my hair is unbelievable… Tanisha Knox is the best stylist to handle my hair. Period.” So says many of the happy guests who frequent Knox Salon.

That’s the kind of feedback that reminds me why I do what I do.

At Knox Salon, we’re not just focused on what your hair looks like—we’re deeply invested in how it feels, how healthy it is, and how it supports your confidence and identity. I’ve spent over 20 years in this industry, and I still light up every time a guest sees their reflection and finally feels seen, beautiful, and empowered.

I founded Knox Salon to be a space where hair meets healing. Where artistry meets expertise. And where everyone—especially people with textured, curly, or chemically treated hair—can find a stylist who understands their unique beauty and brings it to life.

What We Do & What We’re Known For
At our core, we specialize in healthy haircare, precision cutting, hair repair, and stunning, low-ammonia color. While we welcome clients of all backgrounds, we’re especially known for our expertise in short, creative cuts and color transformations that are both beautiful and nourishing.

Whether it’s rich, dimensional brunettes or bright, natural-looking blondes, we’re masters at blending tones in a way that enhances your skin tone and makes your hair look effortlessly radiant. We only use Aveda color, which contains low to no ammonia and is designed to protect the integrity of your hair—because we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between vibrant color and healthy hair.

But above all, we’re known for transformation—the kind you can see and feel.

What Sets Us Apart
I believe what truly sets Knox Salon apart is our intentional, holistic approach. We don’t rush. We listen. Every guest receives a customized experience, rooted in professional knowledge and sincere care. We’re not just creating styles—we’re building trust and long-term results.

I’ve built my career around a strong foundation in hair repair and scalp health, which means we’re not just styling damaged hair—we’re healing it. From advanced conditioning treatments to precision cuts that grow out beautifully, everything we do is designed to restore, enhance, and protect.

And as a woman of color in this industry, I also bring a deep cultural understanding to my work—especially when it comes to textured and multicultural hair types that have long been underserved in high-end salon environments. At Knox Salon, we make luxury and excellence accessible to everyone.

What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud that people trust us with their hair—and their stories. That women leave our salon feeling lighter, brighter, and more confident than when they walked in. That we’ve become a space where authentic beauty is celebrated and nurtured, not forced or compromised.

My team and I work hard to make every guest feel like their best self—and that means taking care of them from the inside out. That’s the heart of our brand.

So, to readers who may not have heard of us yet: If you’ve ever felt like your hair wasn’t being heard or properly cared for, if you’ve struggled with breakage, color that fades too fast, or cuts that just don’t “sit right”—come see us.

At Knox Salon, we specialize in making the hair you’ve always dreamed of a reality—and helping you feel amazing while we do it.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
So, What Would I Tell Someone Just Starting Out?

I’d say this:

* Start even if you’re scared. Fear is part of the process. Courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s acting in spite of it. I was scared when I signed that lease. I was scared when my bank account dipped too low. But I didn’t let it stop me.

* Stay rooted in your “why.” There will be hard days. There will be slow months. If you’re only in it for money or image, you’ll burn out. Let your purpose carry you. For me, it was always about creating space for wellness, beauty, and community—especially for people who rarely saw themselves reflected in luxury spaces.

* Don’t let “no” define you. I heard “no” a lot—no, this area isn’t worth investing in; no, people won’t pay for premium services here; no, that kind of business won’t work. I learned to hear “no,” take what I needed from it, and keep going anyway.

* Be ready to work harder than you ever thought you could. You will wear every hat in the beginning—boss, assistant, stylist, janitor, accountant. You’ll be exhausted. You’ll cry. But you’ll also grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient than you imagined.

* Your struggle is part of the success story. I used to feel ashamed when I couldn’t afford new equipment or when I had to do my own plumbing repairs. Now, I wear those moments like a badge. They shaped me. They gave my business its backbone.

Knox Salon didn’t become what it is because I had everything figured out—it became what it is because I kept showing up, through all the uncertainty, with love, discipline, and vision.

If you’re just starting out, know this: your challenges don’t disqualify you—they qualify you. Your struggle isn’t a sign to stop—it’s proof that you’re building something real.
Keep going.
