Today we’d like to introduce you to Khensu-Ra Love El.
Hi Khensu-Ra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Ra. A founder, systems thinker, and builder committed to closing health equity gaps through culturally grounded, tech-powered care. My journey started on the South Side of Chicago, where I witnessed how systemic neglect and limited access shaped the health of Black families like mine. That reality led me to pursue physics, human-computer interaction, and now a path toward medicine — all to become a physician innovator.
Over the years, I’ve launched ventures at the intersection of food, digital health, and community infrastructure. From winning the Gates Millennium Scholarship to founding Love Y’all Food and now EmpathyTech, my work has always centered on designing systems of care that are replicable, agentic, and trustworthy for underserved populations.
Today, I’m building at the frontier, blending AI, human-centered design, and culturally relevant care to reimagine how we serve those most overlooked by the healthcare system. My story is still being written, but the mission remains clear. Build the systems our communities deserve.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not even close to a smooth road. I grew up in shelters on the South Side of Chicago, bouncing between neighborhoods and schools, carrying more questions than answers. I lost loved ones during the pandemic, battled depression, and struggled to find footing after earning degrees most people don’t expect from someone with my background.
But I kept listening. To myself. To my community. And to the call to keep building. Those challenges didn’t break me. They made me the kind of person who turns pain into purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Empathetic Intelligence, LLC ?
Empathetic Intelligence, LLC is a digital health company designing inclusive, culturally grounded technologies to extend life and health span — with deep care for communities that have long been overlooked.
We specialize in AI-powered systems that deliver proactive, high-trust care for people living with chronic conditions. Our flagship platform, EmpathyTech, blends emotional intelligence, behavioral science, and human-computer interaction to offer personalized guidance and support in real time. While we design for everyone, we give focused consideration to underserved, under-resourced, and BIPOC communities who remain structurally excluded from traditional care.
What sets us apart is our systems-thinking approach and our belief that restoring trust is not a luxury — it’s the future of healthcare. We build with both precision and compassion, delivering care tools that scale from barbershops to clinics, from neighborhoods to networks.
We are proud to be part of a new generation of healthtech founders committed to listening first, building ethically, and creating change that lasts.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve learned that mentorship is less about chasing titles and more about finding people whose values and vision align with yours. For me, it starts with deep listening. I observe how someone moves through the world, how they lead, what they’ve overcome, and how they treat people. If that resonates, I reach out with intention, and not to ask for handouts but to offer alignment. I lead with my story and my mission, not just my résumé.
What’s worked best for me is showing up with clarity about who I’m becoming and how their guidance could help shape that. The most meaningful mentors in my life didn’t come from cold DMs or transactional networking. They came from shared purpose, authentic dialogue, and mutual respect. I also believe in earning mentorship by staying consistent in my work and values. People are more likely to invest in you when they can see that you’ve already invested in yourself.
My advice is this. Be clear on what you’re building. Be vulnerable about what you’re learning. And be bold enough to reach out. And not just to get support but to create genuine relationships that expand everyone involved.
