Community Highlights: Meet Khadijah Nimrod of The Superior Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khadijah Nimrod.

Hi Khadijah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’m a proud Brooklyn native of Grenadian descent, currently living in Los Angeles. My journey to LA has been quite the unconventional one, but I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to do what I love and to be bicoastal.

I left New York in 2009 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in International Business with a concentration in Hospitality Management, at *the illustrious* Howard University in Washington, D.C.  One year post-graduation, I decided to further my education at The George Washington University, where I received a Master of Tourism Administration degree in Events and Meeting Management. Howard University was really the incubator and catalyst that helped me to realize my gift of hospitality and special events. I initially attended Howard with the intention of becoming an attorney, but as I matriculated through the first two years of undergrad, I knew I was called to do something else. God surely had other plans for me, and it took until the end of my sophomore year to shift and align my plans accordingly. It was through my widespread involvement and leadership roles on campus, taking entrepreneurial classes, working internships, and receiving confirmation from others that my desire to pursue a career in event production was born.

Shortly after graduating with my master’s degree, I began working in a sales assistant role for Washington, D.C.’s convention and tourism bureau. After some time working at the company, I decided to apply for a newly created position that would afford me the opportunity to work in a special events & marketing role. Unfortunately, I wasn’t offered the position, but instead of allowing myself to feel bitter or boxed in, I decided to fully bet on myself. About one year later, I decided to launch my own event production and design company and move to Los Angeles to expand my business on the West Coast. This has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, but I am so blessed to wake up every day and do what I love. I am now the Founder and Chief Experience Curator of The Superior Collective–a luxury, special event production and design company!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t believe there’s such a thing as a smooth road to success–no matter who you are or what you do. I’m sure many of you have heard the old adage, “nothing worthwhile comes easy” and this is one of the truest statements ever.  Like many of us, I had “a plan” for my life and I just knew that things would pan out the way I expected them to. However, that was not the case. I’ve had to HUSTLE and sacrifice (I have yet to know a life without it). I’ve had to be resourceful, work hard, and pray even harder.

My journey has truly been one of FAITH. To be honest, I would not be where I am today without it. I’m not talking about the easy kind of faith. I’m talking about tried-and-true faith; pressed on every side yet I refuse to give up faith. The kind of faith that has allowed me to graduate on time, without any student loans in spite of having a tuition balance of over $17,000 on the first day of classes (and no means to pay for it). The kind of faith where all I had was all I needed, and my gifts made room for me to enter into spaces I couldn’t imagine being in. The kind of faith that made me the keynote speaker at my master’s graduation ceremony and allowed me to graduate with a 4.0 when grad school wasn’t initially an option for me. The kind of faith that encouraged me to leave the comfort of a corporate job, launch my own business, and move to LA without an apartment or any clients secured. I’m talking about the kind of faith where even in the midst of a global pandemic and no events scheduled for months at a time, my business grew exponentially. The kind of faith that has defied odds, broken barriers, and has kept me going when I wanted to give up.

I’ve had to overcome so many obstacles along my journey. From financial struggles, doubt and discouragement from others, being taken advantage of, and so much more. As a young, Black woman leading her own event production and design company, I’ve learned my journey to becoming a top event producer in this industry would not be easy. However, I’ve always believed in the gift God gave me to serve others and push the standard upward and forward. I am so grateful because my struggles have made me the person I am today, and I am so much better, stronger, wiser, and professional because of it.
