Community Highlights: Meet Joshua Gonzalez of Joshua R Gonzalez MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Gonzalez.

Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Los Angeles, the son of immigrants. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a doctor. I was saying so to whoever would listen before I ever even knew what doctors really did. That blind devotion continued through college (where I was the first one in my family to graduate) until I landed at Columbia University for medical school. When I started there I had no idea what a urologist was and never imagined that’s the specialty I would eventually call a career.

I knew I wanted my practice to be different and break a lot of norms in how we currently practice medicine. And I knew the only way to do that was to forge my own path. And I’ve been at it for more than 10 years. Now I’ve built a successful practice that helps people of all genders achieve their optimal urological, hormonal, and sexual health. My goal is always to provide comprehensive personalized care to everyone who walks through our front door.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All roads to success are filled with struggle. For me that meant navigating being a college student when no one else in my family had. It was moving to NYC for 10 years, with no friends or family, to complete my medical education. It was me choosing to start my own practice when every told me it would never work. It was having to borrow money from my family to start my dream practice. It’s having to run a business every day and take care of the people that I work with. It’s showing up every day as a present and engaged doctor, son, husband, and father, making sure I balance the needs of myself and my family with those of my patients. And it’s always having humility to understand that I don’t know everything and can’t help everyone, but committing to always trying my best.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Many of these questions I answered in my previous responses.

From a branding perspective, I’m most proud of having built mine from scratch. Everything from my logo and website design to the uniforms and music in my office has all been thought of and curated by me. I think it helps my patients and clients get to know me better. It allows them to understand me better, which in turn allows me to be a better provider for them.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family and health are the two things that matter most. They are the two things in life we always wish we had more of.
