Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Arnold.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The short version is husband, father, former start-up tech professional turned real estate investor, and lifelong basketball enthusiast.
The longer version (as it pertains to Study Hall Hoops) is, the basketball enthusiast in me developed a strong desire to enhance the basketball culture in my local community. Over the years, I’ve watched youth basketball broadly iterate towards high-volume gameplay, rankings, and exposure; which tend to be lower-value, short-term outcomes. Unfortunately, this path often comes at the expense of higher-value, long-term objectives such as fostering a true love for the game of basketball and investing in the individual development required to continue playing at the next level(s). The net result is kids play more games than ever before, yet most are unable to compete effectively.
Rather than simply add to the existing pile of complaints about the current state of youth basketball, I opted to create something to directly address some of the most prevalent issues; which include over-emphasis on winning, under-investment in individual development, and repetitive participation in experiences where the individual is lost in the pursuit of team results.
Study Hall Hoops is intentionally different from traditional youth basketball organizations. Our motto — “It isn’t about being better than someone else… It’s about being better TODAY than you were YESTERDAY” — is fundamental to everything we do. We focus intently on the individual athlete: their skills, their confidence, their mindset, and their long-term relationship with the game; which is where the most valuable life lessons we learn from sports are rooted. Along these lines, the game of basketball mirrors the game of life – The wins and losses are inevitable, but compounded personal growth and development ultimately matter most to the individual.
Study Hall Hoops exists to provide a thoughtful, disciplined, and supportive environment where players can use the game of basketball to learn more about themselves, both on and off the court. More context on our philosophy, programs, and approach can be found at https://www.studyhallhoops.com. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but that’s true of starting any business… And Study Hall Hoops was no different. Building something from the ground up always comes with uncertainty, resistance, and moments where progress feels slower than you’d like. That said, my mentality has always been rooted in a belief that “The best is yet to come.” Challenges are part of the process, not a sign you’re on the wrong path.
One of the biggest hurdles has been introducing change to an established culture. It takes time (and patience) to shift how people think; especially in an environment that has become set in its ways. Leading by example matters; particularly when it comes to showing what’s possible outside the established norm. Introducing new concepts and ideas to an existing ecosystem often creates a renewed sense of inspiration; which ultimately benefits the entire community, including the establishment competition.
When I started Study Hall Hoops, the approach was simple – make the same training regimen I use with my own kids available to others. Early on, it was slow going. Growth wasn’t immediate, and adoption took time… But I knew consistency would prevail. Families started to see real improvement, kids started to gain confidence, and word began to spread.
Ultimately, results speak for themselves. When kids get better, they come back for more. This is easily the most validating part of the journey and serves as a constant reminder that while the road hasn’t always been smooth, it’s a worthwhile pursuit.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At its core, Study Hall Hoops is a youth basketball organization built around the simple yet powerful belief: “It isn’t about being better than someone else… It’s about being better TODAY than you were YESTERDAY.” This mindset drives everything we do and shapes how we engage with athletes, families, and the broader basketball community.
What truly sets Study Hall Hoops apart is our intentional focus on the individual rather than a team. We are not a team-affiliated organization, which allows us to work with anyone in the community – regardless of school, trainer, or travel program affiliation. That independence creates a collaborative ecosystem where our sole priority is player development. We specialize in individualized skill work, confidence-building, and helping athletes develop a sustainable, long-term relationship with the game.
One of the things we’re most proud of from a brand and credibility standpoint is our affiliated relationship with the world-famous Drew League through Team Dawg Pound Elite. The team was a finalist in 2025 and a semi-finalist in 2024, and being connected to a platform with this amount of history, competition, and cultural relevance reinforces the seriousness and authenticity of what we’re building at Study Hall Hoops.
We also want readers to know Study Hall Hoops is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is impact-driven, but we’re also focused on building long-term sustainability. To that end, we’re in the process of launching a merchandise store as a way to become more financially independent by allowing supporters to represent the brand and its values.
Finally, community matters deeply to us. Following the Eaton Fire in January of 2025, Study Hall Hoops partnered with the City of La Cañada Flintridge to provide fire victims with free access to our programs. That moment reinforced what we believe our role should be; which is not just a youth basketball organization, but a community resource.
At the end of the day, Study Hall Hoops is about development, access, and accountability – to the individual, to the game, and to the community we serve.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
It’s difficult for me to point to a single childhood memory as my favorite, because so much of my childhood is woven together by the game of basketball. Gyms, driveways, parks, and pickup runs all blur into one continuous experience. At the time, it all just felt like I was playing a game I loved. What I didn’t realize back then was those moments — both big and small — were quietly becoming the memories that would eventually shape who I became as an adult.
Basketball taught me far more than how to play the game. It taught me how to be consistent, how to handle frustration, how to show up when no one was watching, and how to measure progress internally rather than through comparison. Some days were wins, some days were losses, but every day was an opportunity to learn something about myself. Those lessons stayed with me long after the final buzzer.
Looking back, what stands out most isn’t a particular game or highlight – it’s the process. The repetition. The time spent working on my game by myself. The confidence that comes from incremental improvement. Those experiences compounded over time to shape my mindset as a professional, as a parent, and ultimately as the founder of Study Hall Hoops.
In many ways, Study Hall Hoops is an extension of my childhood memories. It exists to give today’s kids the same opportunity I had – to let the game of basketball be a teacher. Not just of skills, but of patience, discipline, resilience, and self-belief. What starts as “just a game” often becomes something much bigger over time; which I didn’t fully understand as a child, but deeply appreciate now.
