Community Highlights: Meet Everett Ryan of MySound Music Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Everett Ryan.

Hi Everett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my artist journey at 15 years old. I’d always sung in the church, as is typical for many R&B/soul artists. However, it wasn’t until I won a high school talent show that I started to really see a path for myself as an artist. I entered competitions and ended up meeting with various record executives, who all gave me the same spiel about me having raw talent and endless potential, but no fan base or experience. It’s like when you apply for a job and then they tell you that you must have experience in order to be considered. Thankfully, I have thick skin, and I didn’t let the word “no” deter me. I kept moving forward. Kept writing, recording, studying, and growing as an artist.

Today, I have so much more experience and development under my belt. I own a business teaching music, and I’ve just released a full-length album titled “Ever & Ever.” As I continue to make myself visible, I am finding an authentic audience, and I’m really grateful for that.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything in life comes with its challenges. The biggest point of contention for me has been staying motivated through the ups and downs of artistry. Sometimes it feels like I’m perpetually on the edge of a breakthrough. When you’re an independent artist, you are the team. Singer, songwriter, social media manager, booking agent, contractor, creative director, and the investor. That becomes taxing and extremely expensive very quickly. It also delays projects when funding is lacking.

However, wearing that many hats comes with a necessary realization that people truly don’t care until you give them a great reason to care. That realization alone has toughened my skin and has helped me to block out noise and keep pushing. I like a challenge. I feel that you need to have a level of grit and perseverance to be an artist anyway.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have many jobs, but creating and owning MySound Music Studio is what I’m most proud of. I am an artist who teaches. That is especially gratifying because while I’m building myself, I get to help build up others.

There are many voice teachers, especially in Los Angeles. What sets me apart is my brain. I’m the only one in the world with my brain. My approach to each student as an individual, and my awareness that each person learns differently and therefore requires their own unique application, makes all the difference.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a pretty open book. Maybe people would be surprised to know that my top genres after R&B/soul are jazz, Broadway, American Songbook, and gospel. Also, I love Barbra Streisand and anime, but I’m not sure how surprising that is.
