Community Highlights: Meet Esan Durrani of StudyFetch (studyfetch.com)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esan Durrani.

Hi Esan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up very interested in being a musician. I started playing the drums when I was about five years old and have been playing ever since. I also dabbled in guitar here and there. My mom is very into music, and she’s the one who really got me started. She introduced me to the School of Rock, which gave me the opportunity to play music live.

Through that experience, I got deeply involved and ended up playing in a lot of shows. At this point, I’ve probably played in over 500 shows, which was an incredibly formative experience. It taught me what it actually feels like to work toward excellence. From a very young age, I learned what a high bar looks like and what it takes to push yourself to meet it.
While I didn’t end up pursuing music professionally, that experience stayed with me. As I got older, I became interested in other things and started thinking more seriously about what a long-term career path could look like. When I got to college, I reconnected with Ryan, who I went to middle school and high school with. He had been a successful entrepreneur from a young age, always working on different projects, so it felt natural to explore ideas together.

We tried a lot of things early on, and many of them failed. We experimented with a range of ideas before eventually landing in artificial intelligence in education.

At the same time, my own education experience played a big role in shaping what we were building. Growing up, I didn’t always connect with the way material was taught to me. I eventually got into NYU, which made my parents very happy, but personally I didn’t feel deeply connected to the material or the academic paths I was following. There wasn’t much room to pursue curiosity or personal interests, so it often felt like I wasn’t reaching my full potential.

When I finally had the freedom in college to think about what I really wanted to do, that same sense of passion I felt growing up as a musician came back. That’s a big reason we built StudyFetch. We want students to experience that feeling of striving toward something meaningful and feeling a sense of achievement in their learning, earlier rather than later in the education cycle.

We saw a huge opportunity because most AI tools in education were being used as shortcuts. What we wanted instead was to build something that supports learning, curiosity, and real improvement. That’s where StudyFetch began in early 2023.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a growing experience, especially understanding the magnitude of what we do on a daily basis. Building a company like this in the middle of my college career wasn’t something I expected or felt fully prepared for. A lot of it has been learning through experience.

One thing you realize very quickly is that every decision has implications for a lot of people, whether that’s your teammates or the students using the product. I see that responsibility as an opportunity rather than a burden. It’s motivating to know that the choices I make can have a real, positive impact on people’s lives.

One of the biggest lessons I learned the hard way has been about communication. We started as a very small group of friends, around five to seven people, for a long time. At that size, communication is simple. But as you grow to 30 or more employees, everything changes.

Communication becomes critical. Making sure everyone is aligned and understands what’s happening is essential. If you tell one person something in a larger organization, it doesn’t automatically reach everyone else. Learning how to communicate clearly and consistently has been one of the most important parts of growing as a leader.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
StudyFetch is an AI-powered learning platform designed to help students study smarter and succeed academically and professionally. The platform supports learners across K–12, higher education, and professional pathways with personalized tools including flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and study plans. StudyFetch is available in more than 20 languages and is committed to building safe, equitable, and accessible AI for education.

Students should be able to come to StudyFetch and feel like it’s their learning environment, designed around the way they learn best. They shouldn’t feel like they need to adapt their thinking to fit someone else’s system. Instead, the experience should adapt to them.

When students join StudyFetch, I want them to feel a sense of hope about their ability to improve, whether that’s academically or more broadly in their daily lives. One thing that often gets misunderstood is that StudyFetch isn’t just a tool that gives you content and leaves you to figure it out. It’s a learning experience that adapts to how you learn.

Once students bring their materials into the product and choose the path they prefer, it becomes our responsibility to make that experience as effective and personalized as possible.

For me, success looks like impact. It’s about the number of people we’re reaching and how meaningfully we’re helping them. Success means making a positive difference that allows people to discover things they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.

If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take away, it’s that nothing is unattainable. Whoever you are and whatever goals you have, there isn’t anything inherently limiting you from making those things happen. Often, what drives people forward is something external, whether that’s family, loved ones, or people you want to inspire.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think success and happiness comes down to a sense of hope and agency. No matter how you wake up feeling, it shouldn’t feel like you’re trapped or that you don’t have a choice. Whatever you’re doing in life, you should feel like you have control over it. That sense of agency is what keeps me grounded and motivated.
