Check Out Zakiah Davis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakiah Davis.

Hi Zakiah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a Dancer, Choreographer, and instructor. I graduated from The University of Akron with a B.A in Dance with Business Cognate, where I trained in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Choreography and more. After graduating I moved to Los Angeles, Ca to continue to pursue my career as a dancer. As well as continuing my training. Pop culture has heavily influenced the way I view dance. I grew up listening to artist like Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and watching tv shows like Kim possible and Teen Titans. So one might say there’s a bit of a feminine touch to my movement. However, not limited to just that. I love exploring the concepts of femininity and masculinity when choreographing a piece. This allows me to showcase my personality through my work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t describe my journey as anything other than a rollercoaster. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. However, they have shaped me into the person I am today. A lot of my struggles were financial but aside from that I struggled a lot with networking and putting myself out there. In most setting I would say I’m pretty outgoing and confident. However, that changes when I’m in a room full of other talented individuals. I was easily intimidated which made it harder for talk with new people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a dancer/instructor/choreographer. I would say I specialize in commercial. I like to pull inspiration from multiple dance foundations such as hip hop, Jazz funk, street etc. I’m known for my captivating and fun choreography. I like to integrate both feminine and masculine movement into my choreography which also helps showcase my personality. I believe this is what sets me apart from a lot of choreographers/dancers. I feel very in tune with my masc and fem side which allows me to experiment with different styles of movement and music. I’m most proud of my own personal growth as a creative. The more I’ve trained and improved the more it’s helped with my choreography. I’ve created some of the best choreography of my life this year but, I have also gained the most knowledge in dance over the past couple of years being in Los Angeles.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m open to working with everyone as long as they have a positive growth mindset. I enjoy working with like minded people that can also teach and push me to grow. Sharing and interacting with my work is the best way to support me.
