Hi Yifeng “Florian”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age, the stage became my sanctuary, allowing me to explore imagination and self-expression. This early introduction to the arts set me on a transformative path toward becoming the filmmaker I am today.

In middle school, acting evolved from a pastime to a passionate hobby. Stepping into different roles and captivating audiences fueled my desire to share stories on a broader scale.

The high school presented a crucial decision: pursue art or become a student-athlete in soccer. Opting for the path of the artist, I believed in helping others find their voices and illuminating untold narratives.

Enrolling in an art school for university, I honed my skills among a diverse community of artists. Here, ideas flowed freely, pushing boundaries and expanding what we believed possible.

After graduation, I delved into film, television, and commercial productions. Though rewarding, I yearned to reclaim my autonomy as a filmmaker, to tell stories that resonated with my soul.

To realize this dream, I applied to the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI). AFI nurtured my technical skills, expanded my creative horizons, and solidified my understanding of storytelling’s power. Collaborating with filmmakers from various backgrounds, I embarked on ambitious projects that challenged me artistically and personally. Each facet of the filmmaking process became a tool for self-expression and exploring diverse perspectives.

Creating films across borders and cultures opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of humanity. It deepened my understanding of the world and ignited a responsibility to create impactful narratives that inspire, provoke thought, and effect change.

Every step of this fulfilling journey has fortified my resolve to become a great filmmaker. Storytelling transcends craft, connecting us through our shared humanity. With my camera, I aim to shed light on untold stories, amplify silenced voices, and foster empathy in a divided world.

As I stand on the precipice of my future, I carry the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and an unwavering passion. Armed with my camera, I am ready to take on the world, creating films that touch souls and transcend boundaries.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey to becoming a filmmaker was far from straightforward. While I was fortunate to attend prestigious film schools in both China and the United States, I discovered that filmmaking is not solely shaped by formal education but also by life experiences.

As a young man raised in China during a period of rapid development, I found myself immersed in the bustling energy of big cities and the rigors of top-tier educational institutions. Although these environments offered numerous opportunities, I struggled to connect with the diverse tapestry of lives that existed beyond my immediate surroundings. It was difficult to find inspiration for my growth as a filmmaker within the confines of my privileged yet somewhat sheltered existence.

While my life was comfortable and content, I yearned for something more. I longed to break free from the shackles of ordinariness and discover my unique vision and perspective as a filmmaker. I embarked on a soul-searching journey, seeking out experiences and encounters that would expand my understanding of the world and enrich my storytelling capabilities.

Traveling became my compass, leading me to unfamiliar places and exposing me to a myriad of cultures, people, and untold stories. Immersing myself in different communities, I witnessed the struggles, triumphs, and universal emotions that bind humanity together. These encounters became the cornerstone of my growth as a filmmaker, fueling my desire to shed light on the diverse perspectives and untold narratives that shape our world.

Through my journey, I realized that the essence of filmmaking lies in the ability to bridge gaps, both geographical and emotional. It is about capturing the universal human experience and revealing the shared threads that connect us all. I embraced the belief that my ordinariness was not a limitation but rather a canvas upon which I could paint extraordinary stories that resonate with audiences across borders and cultures.

As I continue to evolve as a filmmaker, I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned from my education and the transformative impact of my life experiences. As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my previous work as a filmmaker, I have specialized in crafting compelling and eye-catching stories that captivate audiences and draw them into the journeys of my characters. One notable film from my repertoire is “PAY IT,” a short thriller that delves into the consequences of greed. The story revolves around a young man who, driven by his insatiable desire for wealth, exploits his position as a crime scene photographer for personal gain. However, his path takes a dark turn as destiny catches up with him, ultimately resulting in his own demise, immortalized within a crime scene photograph.

This film exemplifies my commitment to creating narratives that not only entertain but also leave a lasting impact on viewers. I firmly believe that the key to engaging modern audiences amidst the abundance of distractions like TikTok and video games lies in presenting solid stories that resonate deeply. While self-expression is important, I recognize the significance of constructing narratives that hold the audience’s attention, guiding them through the intricacies of the characters’ journeys.

My approach as a filmmaker centers on building suspense, exploring the complexities of human nature, and emphasizing the consequences of our actions. By carefully crafting tension and thought-provoking scenarios, I aim to evoke an emotional response in viewers and prompt them to reflect on the moral dilemmas and universal themes depicted on screen.

As I continue my filmmaking journey, I remain dedicated to creating stories that grip audiences, transporting them into captivating worlds while leaving a lasting impression. By weaving together solid narratives and engaging characters, I strive to bridge the gap between entertainment and meaningful storytelling, delivering cinematic experiences that resonate long after the credits roll.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of my life, and one particular event stands out as a profound turning point. At the age of 21, I encountered a severe injury during a soccer match, abruptly halting the fluent life I had been leading until that moment. Prior to the injury, I was excelling as one of the best students in a prestigious university, enjoying a stable and fulfilling relationship with my girlfriend, and everything seemed to be falling into place.

However, the injury brought not only physical pain but also an emotional and mental toll. It forced me to confront the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of circumstances. In the depths of my despair, I discovered a profound truth: pain is an individual burden that cannot be passed on to others. As a filmmaker and storyteller, this realization became a driving force behind my work—to help people tell their stories and express their deepest emotions through the medium of film.

Moreover, the injury taught me a valuable lesson about the imperfections of life. It shattered the illusion of a perfect existence and thrust me into a realm of setbacks, failures, and tragic moments. Through these experiences, I grew in maturity and began to perceive the world through a different lens. I learned that true growth emerges from adversity and that embracing the complexities of life is essential for personal and creative development.

This newfound perspective has infused my filmmaking with depth and empathy. It has instilled in me a profound understanding of the human condition, allowing me to connect with audiences on a visceral level. By weaving narratives that capture diverse characters’ struggles, triumphs, and emotional landscapes, I aim to foster a sense of shared humanity and inspire others to embrace their unique stories.

As I continue my artistic odyssey, I carry with me the lessons learned from the interplay of luck and adversity. With each film I create, I strive to evoke empathy, provoke thought, and illuminate the multifaceted nature of our existence.
