Today we’d like to introduce you to William Bergman.
Hi William, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a studio cameraman for Fox 45 in Baltimore. I did the nightly news and a weekly sports show. Even though as a kid I’ve always written short stories etc. It’s there where I got on the writer’s path to becoming a screenwriter. I wrote my first script with a buddy who worked there and we got in the top 500 of Project Greenlight. That solidified I was on the right track. Time went on and I was kind of doubting myself. Like most writers do, right? Funny story I got a fortune cookie at dinner that said “you can write your own future” No BS. The sign was there to see this through. I stopped doubting and started learning everything I could about this business. Then one day I listened to that inner voice inside to go for it! So, I left Reisterstown MD and moved to California. Through networking, I was a casting assistant working on films funded by the Hollywood Foreign Press. I landed a gig as a script supervisor and writer on a show called Real Acting (Amazon). I just co-produced and co-wrote a proof-of-concept horror short called: Mum’s the Word which will be hitting the festival circuit soon. I’m very proud of it, I’m also a writing mentor for a class taught by two of the top video game writers in the business. I’ve written several scripts. One that has landed in the hands of a producer who likes it and has been developing it with me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a good ride so far—rough finding gigs initially. Finding the right creative people you want to work with. There have been a couple of false starts to projects that I thought would take off. I partnered with the wrong people at the time who take great passion in their work but were a bit clueless on the quality side of things, Family has always been the driving force for me. They support me in everything I do. Our late dad used to call himself the Grey Ghost. I even named my production company after him. Anyway, to stay grounded I always use that name somewhere in everything I write. A constant reminder that family is always nearby whenever you feel like quitting.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a screenwriter and producer. I like to say when I write it’s always outside of the box. And if I did my job right, you never see it coming. I want you to remember and be excited about what you’ve read. Thankfully it comes naturally to me. I have written in several genres. I tend to gravitate more toward horror. That said I still wrote an action flick and a kid’s movie. So, it is just what gives me the passion that makes me start hitting the keys.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned how precious life is and to not waste a single hour. The streaming market got bigger and content was needed more than ever. The value of maximizing your time and efforts in areas you are passionate about meant more to me than ever before. I became more creative in my storytelling than just words on a page. Carefully choosing my thoughts as if I was leaving a legacy and this was my final screenplay. I mean it could have been? Also, one final thought my parents used to tell us that really struck a chord during Covid. Turn a negative into a positive!
