Today we’d like to introduce you to Vijey Adithya.
Hi Vijey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Digital Intermediate Colorist specializing in post-production for narrative films, documentaries, and video content within the Motion Pictures and Television industry in Hollywood. I completed my Master’s in Cinematography at the prestigious Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. During my time there, I had the privilege of being trained by industry luminaries such as Bill Dill, ASC, and Johnny Jensen, ASC. Their mentorship and expertise have significantly contributed to shaping my skills and understanding of the craft. Before embarking on my journey in the world of cinematography, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from India. While pursuing my engineering studies, I discovered my deep-rooted interest in visual mediums, including street photography and shooting short films. I was drawn to the captivating power of colors and visual designs in evoking emotions and storytelling.
This fascination eventually led me to explore the realm of cinematography, a medium that demanded technical prowess and effective human management on set. My early experiences as a graphic designer and illustrator during my college days further nurtured my passion for the art of visual storytelling. The diverse range of my creative pursuits became the catalyst for my entry into the world of cinema. While initially intending to pursue a career in architecture, I found myself drawn to this industry through a series of serendipitous events. It was not a planned path but rather an organic progression guided by my unyielding curiosity and desire to explore new horizons. In my current role as a Digital Intermediate Colorist, I am continuously striving to expand my knowledge and skills. I firmly believe that lifelong learning is crucial, especially in the face of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are reshaping the landscape of cinema. The prospect of integrating AI into the filmmaking process fills me with excitement and anticipation for the possibilities it brings.
As an accidental filmmaker, I am deeply committed to honing my craft and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and the invaluable experiences that have shaped me into the professional I am today. With each project, I strive to bring a unique perspective and a keen eye for color, ultimately enhancing the storytelling and emotional impact of the films I work on. I am enthusiastic about the future of cinema and the limitless possibilities it holds. I am dedicated to continually exploring and mastering new techniques, collaborating with talented professionals, and utilizing the transformative power of visual media to captivate audiences and evoke profound emotions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges and obstacles, as is often the case in life. However, I have never allowed the pressures of working in a creative field to consume me. For me, it has always been about embracing the process rather than fixating solely on the end result. The dynamic nature of the film industry constantly introduces me to new experiences and insights with each project I undertake. Consequently, maintaining an open-minded approach becomes essential, as collaboration and teamwork play integral roles in achieving success. As a creative individual, I understand the significance of being receptive to the ideas and perspectives of my colleagues. Recognizing that I am not alone in this profession, I actively engage with my fellow professionals to absorb and learn from their unique viewpoints. This collaborative mindset enables me to gain a deeper understanding of their creative contributions and assists me in making informed decisions regarding the visual direction of a project. By embracing the diverse perspectives and expertise of my peers, I can navigate the artistic choices more effectively and ultimately enhance the overall quality of the final product.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in color grading and finishing for motion pictures and television, leveraging my expertise to enhance the visual aesthetics of projects. My journey into the world of color grading began during my studies in cinematography when I developed a keen interest in post-production color grading processes and workflows. The pivotal moment that sparked my transition from being a cinematographer to a colorist occurred when I had the opportunity to work on a project that required a dedicated colorist to finalize the grading. Intrigued by the extent of creative possibilities that could be achieved through software in the post-production phase, I decided to delve deeper into the craft. To expand my knowledge and refine my skills as a colorist, I participated in various online seminars and workshops.
However, it was a transformative experience attending a Masterclass conducted by esteemed Senior Colorist Walter Volpatto from Company 3 that truly revolutionized my perspective. This session emphasized the crucial collaboration between a cinematographer and a colorist in the intimate environment of the dark room where the magic of grading occurs. It was through this class that I came to appreciate the importance of comprehending and manifesting the director’s vision. Building this understanding requires not only technical expertise but also experience and the ability to connect with clients on a deep level. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on a diverse range of projects. I have contributed my skills as a colorist to over 50 short films, several full-length feature films currently streaming on TUBI originals, and various documentaries that I both shot and graded. Notably, I had the opportunity to join the visual effects team for the recent film “AIR,” directed by Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon. In this role, I oversaw the color workflow and maintained color metadata information, particularly as the film utilized the cutting-edge Arri Alexa 35 camera with logc4 color science. This experience provided me with invaluable technical expertise and further broadened my skill set.
Currently, I am engaged with a prominent studio in the color department, where I am involved in remastered versions of films and TV shows originally shot on 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film, as well as videotape. Working with esteemed clients such as CBS, NBC, Paramount, Shout Factory, and Sony Pictures, I have the privilege of enhancing the visual quality and preserving the organic feel of these historical pieces through meticulous color grading. This particular venture has significantly altered my perspective, as I have come to appreciate the unique visual qualities and tonalities achieved through film capture. I have dedicated myself to exploring various film stocks and understanding the intricacies of their color palettes. Moreover, I have taken up the challenge of emulating the organic film look within a digital video context. Through my ongoing experimentation and research, I am developing my own algorithms within color grading software such as DaVinci Resolve to replicate the distinctive characteristics of film emulsion. This endeavor has opened up exciting possibilities, allowing me to push the boundaries of what color grading can achieve and infuse digital videos with the timeless aesthetics of celluloid. I eagerly anticipate the forthcoming theatrical release of “Isabel’s Garden,” a notable feature film in which I had the privilege of serving as a Dailies colorist. This particular project holds a significant place within my portfolio, as it afforded me the opportunity to collaborate closely with the esteemed Cinematographer, actively grading the dailies on set. Furthermore, I have been fortunate to contribute my expertise to several distinguished films that have garnered recognition and acclaim within the industry. Noteworthy among these is “A Fragile Heaven,” which achieved remarkable success across multiple international film festivals and earned the esteemed accolade of Best Colorist at the renowned Los Angeles Cinematography Awards.
Similarly, my involvement as both cinematographer and colorist in the project “Earrings” resulted in nominations for Best Cinematography at esteemed award ceremonies including the New York, Canadian, and European Cinematography Awards. Most notably, this project recently secured the coveted title of Best Short Film Cinematography at the esteemed Los Angeles Cinematography Awards, an official selection for Best Cinematography at the New York Liftoff Film Festival. In addition, I have recently contributed to the comedy-drama “So I Met This Guy,” directed by the highly acclaimed filmmaker Max Lauren. This engaging film is currently being featured at esteemed festivals across the United States, further solidifying my professional growth and enriching my evolving portfolio.
In conclusion, my professional journey as a colorist has been characterized by a deep passion for creating visually stunning and emotionally resonant content. Through continuous learning, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, I endeavor to elevate each project I am involved in. The dynamic nature of color grading and the ever-expanding realm of possibilities it offers to motivate me to explore new techniques and push the boundaries of creativity.
