Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Tharmalingam.
Hi Veronica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Chennai and raised between India and France, two worlds that deeply shaped my creative identity. My journey began with a love for art, heritage, and storytelling — and a desire to merge them through design. After years in Paris, surrounded by couture craftsmanship, I felt called to create something that honored my roots while speaking to modern luxury.
Before I became a designer, I worked as a professional model, collaborating with major fashion houses and appearing in international campaigns and editorials. That experience gave me a front-row view of the artistry, discipline, and emotion behind fashion — but it also opened my eyes to how easily cultural depth and craftsmanship can be overlooked. I wanted to change that narrative — to create pieces that were not just beautiful, but meaningful.
My lineage has always been a guiding force. I’m a descendant of Rani Mangammal, a powerful queen from South India known for her courage, leadership, and grace. Her legacy — and the stories of the women in my family — inspired my brand’s philosophy: “Heart of a Warrior, Soul of a Queen.” It’s not just a tagline; it’s a reflection of the strength, resilience, and quiet elegance passed down through generations.
In 2021, I launched my namesake brand, Veronica Tharmalingam, as a tribute to culture, craftsmanship, and purpose. What began as a small capsule collection debuted at New York Fashion Week, followed by showcases in Paris, and features in Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, Grazia and more. My pieces have been worn by A-list celebrities — including the unforgettable moment when Jennifer Hudson wore my Arul Earrings during her performance at the Vatican. Arul, meaning Grace in Tamil, made that moment feel serendipitous — as if everything had come full circle.
Today, my mission remains the same — to create limited-edition, handmade pieces that tell stories of strength, femininity, and heritage, while supporting artisans and giving back to communities in India and Sri Lanka.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all — but I don’t think it’s meant to be. Every part of the journey has tested my resilience. Building a brand that stands for something deeper than fashion — heritage, craftsmanship, and purpose — comes with unique challenges. From navigating production across continents to staying true to my vision in an industry that often values speed over soul, there have been countless moments that required patience, faith, and courage.
There were times I questioned everything — especially when trying to build something meaningful from scratch, as a woman, an immigrant, and an independent designer. But those struggles also shaped my voice. They reminded me why I started — to create a space where artistry and authenticity still matter, where every piece tells a story and every artisan behind it is seen and celebrated.
One of those beautiful, unexpected moments came recently when Jennifer Hudson wore my Arul Earrings during her performance at the Vatican “Grace for the World” concert along with Andrea Bocelli on Sept 13 2025 and it was broadcast live on ABC, Hulu and Disney. The word Arul means “Grace” in Tamil — and the placement happened completely organically. I didn’t plan it, and that’s what made it so special. It felt like a quiet affirmation that when you lead with intention and integrity, the universe meets you halfway.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I design limited-edition jewelry and couture handbags under my namesake label, Veronica Tharmalingam, but at its heart, what I truly do is tell stories — stories of women, of legacy, of resilience.
My inspiration has always been rooted in the women who raised me. My mother and grandmother were both incredibly strong — elegant yet fierce, deeply spiritual yet practical. They taught me that true beauty isn’t about perfection, it’s about purpose. My mother would tell stories of our ancestors, of queens and warriors, and those stories stayed with me. They became the foundation of my work and my life philosophy: “Heart of a Warrior, Soul of a Queen.”
That phrase represents every woman who has fought quietly behind the scenes, every artisan whose craft keeps culture alive, and every dreamer who dares to build something meaningful from the ground up.
Each piece I create is handmade in India in very limited numbers — often under 25 — to preserve authenticity and honor the artisans behind them. I work closely with local craftspeople to ensure every design carries not just beauty, but soul. I believe in fashion that gives back — we donate a portion of our profits to support communities in India and Sri Lanka — and I see my brand as a bridge between heritage and modernity, between art and humanity.
What sets my work apart isn’t just the design — it’s the story behind it. Every collection is a reflection of love, legacy, and strength passed down through generations. I’m proud that my pieces have been worn by incredible women across the world, but what fulfills me most is knowing that each creation carries a piece of where I come from — and hopefully, inspires someone else to embrace their own roots and power, too.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is watching my mother shop for sarees and jewelry in Chennai. She had such a unique eye for color and detail — she would mix shades and patterns that no one else dared to pair. I remember sales associates warning her that her combinations “wouldn’t look pretty,” and then watching their faces when she proved them wrong. Every time, the pieces she custom ordered for herself would end up selling out.
Those moments weren’t just about fashion — they were about confidence, creativity, and staying true to yourself. My grandmother was the same way, always ahead of her time, designing her own looks and turning heads wherever she went. Growing up surrounded by that kind of fearless self-expression shaped everything I do today. It’s where my love for storytelling through color, texture, and craft truly began.
