Check Out Thomas Augusto dos Santos Claro’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Augusto dos Santos Claro.

Thomas Augusto dos Santos Claro

Thomas Augusto, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career as an actor officially in 2019, when I moved to the United States. I came from Brazil, my home country, where I didn’t know what to do next in my life, which steps I should take, and the path I should follow. Moving to the United States really opened the horizon for me because I knew that here I would have much more chances of following an artistic career than I would have in Brazil. I came here to go to college and study Theatre, which I did. I graduated last May, but I was already working with acting during most of my time in college, trying to get involved in the Theatre department, being on the university plays, and looking for student films, indie films, short films, and features I could work on. I started building a resume and getting bigger and bigger projects until I built my current resume. I have also taken many classes with amazing coaches along the way, always keeping myself training and improving my art. Last year was the year that I had more work than ever, and I am excited to start 2024 strong and to be in great productions!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been sometimes tricky, sometimes smoother, and sometimes very challenging. An actor’s career is something very unpredictable because you never know when you will get a job. We as actors are always submitting ourselves, being submitted by our representatives, auditioning, creating relationships with professionals in the industry, and always trying to open doors, but knowing that the jobs are beyond our control. We can do our best and just wait for the decisions to be made about a role. This is something I had to learn when I was starting my career: to let go and don’t think too much about what we auditioned for. I got really disappointed in the past about not getting roles I auditioned for in some productions, but now I am used to that, and I know it’s part of the job as an actor. I also had amazing opportunities and worked in great productions I really wanted to be part of. The road of an actor’s career is full of highs and lows, ups and downs, and it’s always like this. I believe the acting career itself is a big challenge because some actors have a period of their lives that they book a lot, and then they don’t book for a long period of time, and it fluctuates without the actor’s control. Sometimes, we do everything right, but the role goes to another candidate that has something that fits the character better. The competition in this market, having many actors that have the same type as you, also makes this career challenging and highly unpredictable. We can only work hard on ourselves, our craft, our techniques, our relationships in the industry, do our best and let go and move on to the next audition or the next project. It is a beautiful career and really exciting, and I love being in this world of acting.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself an artist. I have experimented many different types of art, which include drawing, painting, writing stories and poetry, playing music, writing music, and acting. I think that’s all I did so far. Currently, my focus is on my acting career. Performing is what I like the most and what I want the most as a career. I have also been writing, even though I am still far from my writing goals. I am thinking of ideas and starting to write screenplays for short films that I want to produce, direct, and act in. The ultimate focus of my writing at the moment is to create more material and stories to tell through my acting. I usually spend my days and weeks working as an actor, looking for productions to apply for, recording and submitting auditions, going to sets to work in the productions I was cast in, taking classes to specialize myself more and more in techniques and in developing my work, and, of course, making connections and creating relationships with people in the industry from many different states in the US. I am currently known as an actor because my career as a writer is still only starting. As an actor, I already found myself great opportunities to be in amazing productions, as well as got offered some roles thanks to the relationships I have been making.

What I am most proud of is getting my face out there and not being afraid of talking to people, asking questions, trying to learn from professionals that are more experienced than me, following tips and advice, offering assistance, and my desire to work and create great productions. I am very proud of the roles I have played, the friends I have made in my journey, and the projects that I had the chance to give my contribution with my art.

What sets me apart from others, I believe is, first, the fact that I came from far away. I moved out of my country, Brazil, to come here because I wanted to get an education and pursue an acting career in the United States. Also, I believe I can bring my point of view and cultural experiences to all the productions I work in. I have had the chance to live in two very distinct countries and learn a lot about people’s behavior and characteristics. I saw my background helping to shape my personality, which is something important in my acting career. Another point is that every person is unique in the world, and people’s essence can be expressed, especially in the field of arts, so just the fact that I am an artist is something that sets me apart from others. When an actor brings a character to life, it’s the actor’s own interpretation and expressions about that character. This is something unique that cannot be replicated by any other actor. Every artist in the world has something to bring and contribute to society that no other artist can, so there is space for everyone in the art world, and in this case, the acting field. I am the only person who has lived my life and who felt every good and bad moment that happened to me, and everything I have been through in all my years of life is something that only I know and only I can bring emotionally to my art. What I have to offer to acting and to the arts is my life and everything that impacted me and built me as the human being I am today.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey was and still is persistence. Not giving up and keep fighting to achieve my goals and objectives. Keep always improving, learning, meeting people, training scenes, and auditioning because the work never ends. An actor can always improve and become better and better. The same with a writer or any other type of artist. The work goes on as part of our lives. I am constantly doing my best at the moment to keep going forward, no matter what and no matter how fast I am moving. What matters is to keep going on, keep following my dreams, and move to the path I believe is the best and that makes the most sense to my life. Artists work, literally, with their lives, experiences, and emotions. And that’s everything an actor does and puts in the work, in my opinion. From my persistence and from constantly pushing myself, I feel a lot of improvement when I compare myself to Thomas Augusto from three, four, and five years ago. A lot has changed in my life for good, and the desire to have this career and battle for it is something that gave me more discipline and focus than I used to have years ago, for example. The lesson really stuck with me and taught me better ways to act and behave to better conduct and move my career forward. There is still a long way to go and much more to learn from this and other lessons during my career as an artist.
