Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Haro
Hi Susana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Central Mexico. In high school I decided to take a cosmetology course so I could pay my way through college doing hair. It worked and I now have three degrees. When I started to pursue my interior design degree, I quickly realized I really missed doing hair. So, I went back to hair and I have never looked back. I opened my first salon in Culver City, CA in 2019. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit the next year and the local homeless situation got out of control. Since it was no longer safe to work there, we were forced to shut our doors in 2021. Shortly thereafter, my husband and I moved to Austin, Texas to get a fresh start. I love Austin, but it never felt quite like home, so we decided to move back to California and open Summer House Salon in Redondo Beach, CA in 2023. It was terrifying to start something new again. Losing my first salon was devastating and I didn’t know if I could do it again. It was worth it. We love our salon family, our new neighborhood and I have no regrets. I hope we can help keep the people of the South Bay beautiful for many years to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
– It’s never a smooth road and. if it is, then you have nothing to say, lol. In my youth, learning to speak English and trying to fit in seemed important. Now that I’m older and my English is pretty good, trying to stand out seems better.
-Having to shut down my first salon was devastating. You put your heart and soul into a project only to have it taken away from you for reasons you can’t control.
-Starting over many times is also very difficult, especially as a hairdresser. It takes years to build a clientele and a reputation, but I’m stronger for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in haircutting and hair color. I’m most known for curly haircuts. I didn’t mean to become a curly cut specialist, I just evolved into it out of necessity. I have curly hair and no one seemed to understand how to cut my hair to make the most out off my curls. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t the only one with that problem. There are so many people that have curly hair that can’t find someone to cut it. So, I am now a curly hair advocate. Growing up, straight hair was the norm so we all tried to hide our curls by straightening our hair with a flat iron or chemicals or both. My goal for every client is that they love their hair. So, I educate them on how they can make the most of it. Every haircut and color is customized to the person in my chair.
I’m most proud of how many people I have helped over the last 30 years. I have so many good memories. The hair industry is about building relationships and making people happy. I get to create and make people smile. I’m pretty lucky.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was really shy growing up. You wouldn’t know it now, because I am a very outgoing adult. I think it might have been a combination of not knowing the language and insecurity. I do remember art class for one hour once a week in elementary class was my favorite time of school. I didn’t know I could become an artist as a career. I have always liked creating things and making things with my hands. I always rescued furniture from the street and gave it new life. I made clothing for my dolls and gave them new hairdos, but never played with them in a traditional sense. They were just tiny models.
