Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Gerali.
Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Founded by a former University Dean and Professor, Sanctuary grew out of years of mentoring and discussions with students who dreamt of a viable way for people to meet, be mentored and impact social needs and injustices right within their own communities. With the commitment of some former students, Dr. Steve Gerali launched Sanctuary Claremont, a 501c3 non-profit organization. The coffee house will turn all of its profits into Claremont and the surrounding communities. The name Sanctuary was chosen because it denotes a safe place and a sacred space. We hope you experience both.
As a non-profit coffee shop we have committed to donate 100% of our profits to charities that impact social concerns and injustices. In addition, along with out Coffee broker we have committed to donate 10lbs of food for every pound of coffee that we serve or sell. All of our coffees and teas are dieect or ethically trades assuring that a farmer gets a fair wage.
In 2022 Sanctuary Coffee was named best coffee shop in LA by Lux INternational food and beverage magazine. We believe that we are impacting lives with every cup.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of our biggest struggles is that while the state recognizes us as a non-profit many of the departments and services run by the state do not. As the resut we are exempt from paying some tax and fees from one department but not from others.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Dr Gerali founded Sanctuary Coffee wit some of his students when he was a tenured University professor and Dean. He is is an award winning author having authored 10 books. In addition Dr Gerali has spoken extensively around the world on mentoring character particularly in young men.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity, adventure and culture the city brings, Particularly for coffee – LA in a great hub.
What I dislike is that CA is hostilr to businesses. Everything is an uphill climb. We are over taxed and over regulated.
