Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Abarca.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In my 20s, I started my career as an HR Generalist, then transitioned into working as an Executive Assistant. I spent years in the corporate world—working long hours, always salaried, constantly stressed, and often feeling burnt out. Eventually, I hit a point where I knew I needed more. More freedom, more time for my family, and more alignment with what made me feel fulfilled.
With the support of my amazing husband—who has always been my number one cheerleader and the reason I’ve been able to make bold moves—I decided to step away from the corporate world. I wanted to be present for my two beautiful children: my daughter, who is nine, and my son, who is three. Being a stay-at-home mom became a new chapter, and it gave me the space to reflect on what I truly wanted to pursue.
I’ve always had a love for beauty, so I enrolled at Paul Mitchell and earned my esthetician license. I initially started doing facials, but the slower pace wasn’t the right fit for me. In 2022, I got certified in spray tanning through Dolce Glow—and that’s when everything changed. I loved how fast-paced it was, how I got to meet different people constantly, and how rewarding it felt to help others feel confident in their skin.
Now, at 37, I’m proud to say I’ve built a business doing something I love. Spray tanning has allowed me to combine creativity, confidence, and flexibility. I’ve developed an eye for skin tones and undertones, and it’s been a blessing to offer a glow without sun damage—while still being able to prioritize my family.
Today, I offer spray tanning services at two locations: Collective Hair Studio in Pasadena and my own suite in Glendora, California at A&P House of Beauty. I truly couldn’t have done it without the love and support of my husband and the motivation that comes from being a mom. This journey has been all about creating a life I love—on my own terms.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced in this journey has been navigating the competitive world of beauty—especially spray tanning. It’s easy to get caught up comparing yourself to other artists, especially those who are more well-known or working with influencers and celebrities. At one point, I really felt the pressure to “keep up” or be seen at a certain level.
But over time, I’ve learned that it’s not about who you tan or how big your following is—it’s about the experience you create and the connections you build with your clients. That shift in mindset completely changed everything for me. I started focusing on my craft, my energy, and the trust I build with each person who walks through my door.
That mentality has helped me grow and stay grounded. It reminded me that there’s room for everyone in this industry and that what makes each artist special is how they make people feel—not just how many followers they have.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in custom airbrush spray tanning, using clean, cruelty-free solutions that enhance natural skin tones while nourishing the skin. When it comes to choosing solutions, I’m very intentional. I only use formulas that are beneficial for all skin types—packed with skincare benefits like: • DMI for deeper, longer-lasting color
• Coconut Milk for hydration
• Green Tea Extract to calm and protect
• Lavender Petal to soothe
• Caffeine to brighten and tone
They’re also infused with anti-aging and toning properties, so my clients get a glow that not only looks great but feels great—with a long-lasting, beautiful fade.
I’m known for my eye for detail, making clients feel comfortable, and creating natural, glowing results. I’ve had the pleasure of spray tanning incredible clients and building strong connections along the way.
What sets me apart is the care and intention I bring to every session—it’s not just about the tan, it’s about helping people feel confident, seen, and beautiful in their own skin.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
After getting certified, I found mentorship by actively seeking out community. I joined Facebook groups for spray tanning and esthetics to stay current on skin conditions, new techniques, and solution updates. I also made it a point to connect with other spray tan artists—building relationships, sharing knowledge, and learning from each other.
One of the best experiences was meeting another artist who became a close friend. We started testing solutions on each other, which really helped me understand how different products perform and how clients might feel during and after their tans. It gave me the chance to put myself in their shoes and constantly improve. For me, it’s all about staying connected, staying curious, and learning from both the industry and the people in it
