Check Out Sina Kamran’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sina Kamran.

Sina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Before I started Design Scapes Inc. in 2020, I spent years installing other designers’ plans. Too often, the drawing looked right, but the site told a different story. slope, drainage, soil, hidden utilities, access, coastal exposure. Once the ground was open, the original vision started to slip.
That’s why I brought design and build under one roof. The same team that plans the space also builds it. We think through drainage, retaining, material transitions, and sequencing before construction starts, so the yard that gets installed is the yard we designed.
After more than 15 years in design-build, that approach is the company. One designer led team. One in-house crew. One project at a time. We build outdoor spaces for how West LA and South Bay homeowners actually live, and for the conditions those yards have to survive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, haha.
The hard part has never been the design. It’s holding a higher standard in an industry that often splits design and construction, then wonders why the two don’t match.
Early on, I decided we would not stack jobs and hand work to a rotating set of subcontractors. That meant saying no to volume so one crew could stay on one project. It also meant building the certifications and systems ourselves: ICPI for pavers, NCMA for retaining walls and drainage, Rain Bird for irrigation, NADRA for decks and outdoor structures, plus California C27 and B licenses.
Coastal and hillside work adds another layer. Salt air, wind, tight access, and grade changes punish sloppy details. We learned to plan for those conditions at the start, not after a problem shows up at week 6.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We design and build full backyard remodels for West LA and South Bay homeowners: patios, outdoor kitchens, decks, planting, lighting, drainage, and the hardscape that has to hold up in salt air and on a slope.
Keep the 3-week, 3-month, and 9-month line only if that is the actual warranty schedule. The site currently says “warranty check-ups,” not those dates. If the dates are real, leave them. If they are aspirational, change it to: After install, we come back for warranty check ups.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I can’t build the business around luck. Timing and good clients matter, but most results come from seeing the site clearly and sticking with the work until the details are right. The “lucky” projects are usually the ones where we planned drainage, access, and sequencing early enough that the surprises never became the story.
