Today we’d like to introduce you to Sid Singh.
Hi Sid, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a professional comedian performing since 2009! I also went to Law School at UC Hastings (now UC Law SF) and graduated in 2018 with an emphasis on human rights! Since 2019 I have combined the two while primarily living in Europe (London, Amsterdam, and Barcelona) by touring all over the world to raise money and spread the true stories of asylum advocacy and court battles by the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies! They’ve saved tens of thousands (if not more) of asylum seekers by challenging every U.S. administration since 1999 to better administer the asylum process! I have tried to highlight these victories by writing funny stand up shows that make learning all of this more palatable! Essentially, the causes CGRS fights for are so obvious and righteous that when enough people pay attention to them, they win every time! So I put it upon myself to help people pay attention! So far I’ve done that to the tune of helping raise over 100,000 dollars while getting nominated three different times for Best Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and even winning the award for Best Performer in 2023!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started doing comedy, I always assumed I would be doing a bunch of auditions and would have to withstand being told “no” over and over again. Instead, the most difficult aspect of the past 17 years is how often I’m told “sorry, but we won’t even find out.” Especially to be told that when the person declining to find out knows: where my money goes and the causes I hope to fight for, has been really tough.
Even tougher has of course been Trump stacking the Supreme Court and actively trying to gut asylum protections to the strongest and cruelest degree since the UNHCR treaties came into existence in the 1940s. Every year the U.S. is sentencing more and more people to death by denying or refusing to hear their asylum claims. Every year it gets harder to understand why so many American citizens still don’t care. Hopefully my shows and fundraisers can help fight back against this shocking apathy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think this was answered in the questions above?
I’m a former improviser at the prestigious Boom Chicago theater in Amsterdam, a comedy writer for television in the UK, and an award winning stand up comedian. I use these skills to raise money for asylum seekers at the appellate level, which hopefully doesn’t set me apart from other artists for long!
What matters most to you?
Living in a world that continues to fight for equality and the pursuit of happiness everywhere!
