Reem AlShaini

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Since my childhood, I’ve always been driven by a deep passion for storytelling and the world of filmmaking. My dream has been to contribute to the process of creating movies and bringing stories to life. Film, for me, has always been one of the most powerful mediums to influence and connect with people. Through cinema, we can immerse ourselves in diverse situations and emotions, gaining insights into the human experience and self-discovery. This fascination with the profound impact of film on people’s lives has been a driving force behind my aspirations.

What has captivated me most in the realm of filmmaking is the art of world-building and creating immersive environments that either mirror our own reality or transport us to entirely new and uncharted territories. This concept of designing and shaping cinematic worlds, whether familiar or entirely novel, has been the central driving force behind my desire to become a production designer.

My educational journey led me to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture, and I subsequently worked in the field as an architect for several years. This experience enriched me with a diverse skill set that I am certain will enhance my abilities as a production designer. It allowed me to cultivate an eye for design, a keen sense of spatial aesthetics, and an appreciation for the meticulous details that contribute to a cohesive visual narrative.

However, my true passion has always been in the art of storytelling through film. With unwavering determination, I embarked on a journey to enter the film industry in Jordan. I enrolled in filmmaking courses, networked with industry professionals, and expressed my desire to be a vital part of the art department. My perseverance eventually led to an opportunity to work in the art department on high-profile commercial projects with an esteemed production company. During this time, I had the privilege of receiving invaluable guidance and mentorship, which further fueled my passion for production design.

My decision to apply to AFI (American Film Institute) stems from my eagerness to become an authentic and proficient storyteller. I am committed to honing my skills and knowledge in all aspects of production design. I aspire to be an integral part of the storytelling process and to make a meaningful impact in the world of cinema.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a testament to the unwavering dedication I have invested and continue to invest each day. While it has not been a path without its challenges, I wholeheartedly believe that the effort I’m putting in is, and will continue to be, entirely worthwhile. I’m confident that, in the future, I will look back with immense pride at the progress I’ve made and the hard work I’ve dedicated.

I come from Amman, Jordan, a city I hold dear and consider one of the most beautiful in the world, I had to make a tough decision to pursue my dreams. This decision required me to leave my job, my family, and everyone I hold close back in Jordan to start anew. Admittedly, there have been moments when I’ve felt the weight of uncertainty about my future. It’s only natural to occasionally feel apprehensive about the path ahead.

However, my conviction remains steadfast. I know for certain that the daily commitment I put into expanding my knowledge, refining my skills, and nurturing my creative talent will ultimately lead me to the place I am destined to be.

I am also very lucky to have the support of my family and friends who push me to keep going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Jordanian production design student at the American Film Institute, and I’m deeply passionate about being a part of the storytelling process in the world of cinema. I’ve had the privilege of working as a production designer on several short films over the past year, which has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Being a part of the art department and contributing to the visual narrative of these films has been both inspiring and fulfilling. What makes me particularly proud is the dedication and enthusiasm I bring to each project. I’m genuinely fascinated by every aspect of the art department and the collaborative effort it entails. It’s the kind of work that keeps me motivated and drives my creativity.

Coming from the Middle East, I believe I bring a unique perspective to my work. I grew up watching films from all around the world, which exposed me to diverse cultures and storytelling techniques. Additionally, my experiences of traveling to various places worldwide have enriched my understanding of different environments and aesthetics. I embrace these diverse influences and integrate them into my designs.

I thrive on challenges and often find myself delving deep into research and immersing myself in the mindset required for each project. It’s a process I enjoy immensely and one that allows me to create meaningful and authentic designs.

Ultimately, my goal is to continue working on projects that resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impact. My journey has been marked by a deep appreciation for storytelling, an openness to diverse perspectives, and an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of my craft.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I myself am just starting out, and I understand that making the decision to follow your dream requires taking bold steps and believing in yourself. My advice is to follow what feels right for you, even when it seems impossible or intimidating. Just keep going and remember why you started. Always remain true to yourself and your craft, and be willing to learn and accept criticism. As long as you believe in yourself and your purpose, and you’re willing to put in the work every day, you’ll get to where you want to be. I believe that the most crucial aspect is always being open to learning and asking for help when needed, something I’m actively working on myself.
