Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Yeh.
Hi Phil, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started our literacy campaign in 1985 after I interviewed Wally Amos aka Famous Amos for my publication Uncle Jam. Wally was involved with promoting literacy all across this nation. We took it a step further and went all over the world. Our group was called Cartoonists Across America & The World. I am a cartoonist and I did many books featuring other creative people to help spread the message of how to become creative. We also paint murals with the slogan Read. Avoid Extinction. To date, we have painted over 2000 murals in 49 U.S. States and 18 other countries. We have distributed more than 2 million books. I continue to speak in schools, book festivals and other places where our message can reach the most people. Our web site is www.wingedtiger.com
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We got a lot of support from Barbara Bush and major corporations in the early days of our campaign. Unfortunately, the world has other priorities in this new century and support is hard to come by today. But we still continue to do our work and we hope to get some new energy and young people to join us. At 72, I am still on the road.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started drawing at the age of 2. I am still drawing and painting. I do a new painting each morning and still come out with books. To date, I have published more than 100 books. My most known work is probably Dinosaurs Across America which covers all 50 states in a colorful and fun way. My dinosaurs built a time machine space ship millions of years ago so they could come to our time with the slogan “Read. Avoid Extinction”….they have been featured in many of my books for all ages. I am also known as the creator of The Winged Tiger and in this series, I have many guest artists offering their advice on how they get their ideas including George Lucas, Kevin Eastman, Trina Robbins, Jean Giraud aka Moebius, David Brown, Miel. Alfredo Alcala, Lynn Johnston, and many others. What sets me apart is my characters are multi-ethnic and come from all over the planet.
I also do school assemblies and murals promoting reading and creativity.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I never use violence in my stories.
