Today we’d like to introduce you to Peanut.
Hi Peanut, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been performing since I was a little kid. It started with dance recitals and plays in elementary school. As I got older, I became interested in punk music and counterculture fashion. I also started taking inspiration from cult classic films like Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Bride of Chucky. I’ve always loved music and making my own clothes so naturally I started a band and became a drag artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been easy becoming an artist. I had to overcome a lot of self doubt that was ingrained in me at an early age. I always knew I was meant to make my own art but I stopped myself from shining too brightly. I think it was important for me to make people around me comfortable for too long. I found myself surrounded by naysayers and knew I had to get out of certain environments.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a drag artist and a singer who writes and produces their own music. My drag persona, PEEZ NUTS, challenges what masculinity looks like as a queer Latine. For example, I try to personify rockstars like Prince and Glenn Danzig while taking inspiration from Chicano style. I try to do all this with feminine sex appeal and comedic timing. It’s important for me to push the boundaries of gender because it’s something that I feel should be deconstructed due to the toxic boxes conservatives and some people in my own LGBTQIA+ community try to put people in. My band Las Brujitas formed from another duo I’m part of called Pink Light. My partner encouraged me to front my own project after hearing poems/lyrics I wrote and listening to the music I grew up with. I call Las Brujitas “mad girl music”. It evokes the rage and wildness that comes from being a queer brown person in this country. Our sound comes from lots of different genres including: industrial, hip-house and synth punk. Musicians like NIN, Zebra Katz and Peaches inspire us as well as artists like Cypress Hill, Rico Nasty and Madonna. We have our EP THE TRILOGY out everywhere now.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Book me for drag and music gigs! I’ve performed all over Downtown LA, Hollywood and Long Beach but also have traveled out of state for gigs. Buy my EP, THE TRILOGY off Bandcamp. Like what you see on my ig? Tip me through Venmo if you missed my drag show.
