Today we’d like to introduce you to Mixie.
Hi Mixie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a born Manhattanite, newly LA local, “mad scientist” renaissance girl for the 21st century—and LGBTQ+ to the bone. Growing up with music always being the exclamation point to every sentence of my life; however, unable to find a sonic reflection of my own experience, I yearned to create music and art of my own that could contribute to filling that void.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Mental health and having a chronic illness have occasionally hindered, yet simultaneously motivated and allowed me to push boundaries in my work. I believe we are bestowed only with what we can endure; my hurdles have all been intentionalities to allow me to continue on this intended journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name, MIXIE says it all. As of late, I’ve witnessed exponential growth in the over-saturation of cookie-cutter molds across the creative board. I pine for newness. I aim to invite you all into my brain, my world, by genre-blending in all of my artistic endeavors, whether it be directing, fashion, digital design, or music.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I came out as queer publicly through the release of my debut single ‘run away’ off the MIXIE EP project. I believe the concept of “coming out” to be obsolete—a construct meant to appease a heteronormative society. I wanted my debut single release to establish a space where people were invited to feel safe, seen, heard, and more accurately represented the pillars of which constitute my body of work that led me to direct a music video including dozens of LGBTQ+ content creators across the globe. Queer narratives in music and film I had come across were often that of overcoming rather than celebrating. I want to bask in authenticity, joy, pain, subversiveness. I desire nothing more than to continue to evolve and create this intentional creative work ‘til the next life. Life is nothing without risk.
